RMU Earns Fifth at NEC Indoor Championships

Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University women's track & field team completed the 2013 Northeast Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships Sunday by placing fifth out of 12 institutions at the Prince George S.L.C. in Landover, Md.

The Colonials finished with 50 points. Taking home the team title was Monmouth, which finished with 162.5 points.

A pair of RMU student-athletes took home individual titles Sunday, as freshman Olivia Loy (Lemoyne, Pa. / Cedar Cliff) continued the program's dominating run in the pole vault with a championship, All-NEC First Team accolades as well as a spot on the All-NEC Rookie Team, while junior Yulia Vasilyeva (Volgograd, Russia) won the triple jump.

Loy posted a leap of 3.70 meters (12'1.50") in the pole vault to outlast Lauren McDonald of Monmouth and Elissa Ingram of Mount St. Mary's, who each finished with jumps of 3.60 meters (11'9.75").

Loy's mark was good enough to also establish a new school record in the event, surpassing the leap of 3.55 meters that she established earlier this season that was also tied by sophomore Bethany Ledford (Huntingdon, Pa. / Huntingdon).

One of four Colonials to score in the pole vault, Loy was joined by Ledford and seniors Casey Folga (Erie, Pa. / Harborcreek) and Sarah Lueck (Monrovia, Md. / Urbana).

Ledford and Folga each tied for fourth by clearing 3.40 meters (11'1.75"), while Lueck claimed sixth thanks to a tally of 3.20 meters (10'6"). Combined, the quartet racked up 22 points for Robert Morris in the event.

Vasilyeva claimed All-NEC First Team accolades in the triple jump thanks to a leap of 11.38 meters (37'4"), which helped her defeat Shnell Wishart of Fairleigh Dickinson, who finished at 11.34 meters (37'2.50").

In the track events, a day after establishing a new school record in the mile, sophomore Marissa Polk (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Oakland Catholic) earned bronze in the finals of the same event with a time of 5:12.41. She trailed only Amanda Eller of Monmouth and Jennifer Haffner of Saint Francis U., who finished with times of 5:07.78 and 5:09.79, respectively.

In the throws, freshman Jessica Guyett (Washington Court House, Ohio / Washington) posted the best mark for RMU in the shot put with a toss of 12.99 meters (42'7.50") to place sixth, while junior Rachael Kotula (East Berlin, Pa. / Bermudian Springs) earned seventh in the weight throw thanks to a final tally of 14.49 meters (47'6.50").

The 2013 NEC Indoor Track & Field Championships now in the books, RMU prepares for the 2013 IC4A/ECAC Indoor Championships, which will take place March 1-3, 2013, Boston, Mass.
