Box Score Pittsburgh, Pa. - Senior assistant captain Cobina Delaney (Stittsville,
Ontario / Ottawa Jr. Senators) scored at the 108th minute of a triple overtime contest to lead the Robert
Morris University women's
hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Lindenwood in the first round of the College
Hockey America (CHA) Tournament Friday afternoon at the RMU Island Sports
Center.
Throughout
the majority the first period, Robert Morris dominated play as it outshot Lindenwood,
20-7 and maintained control of the puck in the offensive zone. The Colonial
penalty kill until successfully denied the Lions' one power play chance of the
period. RMU fired five shots on net in its three power play opportunities of
the frame.
Lindenwood broke
the scoreless tie that lasted for more than 25 minutes when Alyssa West scored
the opening goal of the contest with 12:10 on the clock in the second period.
West nailed home a rebounded shot from Allyson Arcibal for the first Lion score.
Alison Wickenheiser was credited with the secondary assist for the Lions.
RMU put 11
shots on net in the second frame, four of which came on two Colonial power play
chances. Robert Morris' penalty kill squad stifled the three Lion power play chances
in the period.
Less than
five minutes into the third period, Robert Morris tied the contest at one goal
each. Junior defenseman Anneline Lauziere (St. Thomas, Ontario / London Jr. Devilettes) blasted a shot on net that was tipped
by junior forward Kristen Richards
(Toronto, Ontario / Niagara University) only to be saved by Lindenwood
goaltender Nicole Hensley. Sophomore Maddie Collias (Roseville, Mich. / Belle Tire) found the rebounded shot from
Richards at her feet and fired the puck past Hensley for her sixth goal of the
season. The assists are the fifth and 14th of the year for Lauziere and Richards. The
assist is also Lauizere's third in the past two games for Robert Morris while
Richards now owns a four consecutive game point streak.
Both squads
skated tied, 1-1 for the remanding 15 minutes of the third period. The Lions
had four power play opportunities against Robert Morris' three in the third. The
Colonials continued to dominate the shot count as they outshot the Lions, 20-9
in the third period and an overall, 51-24 in regulation.
In the first
twenty minute overtime period, RMU continued to dominate in shot count and to
maintain control of the puck in Lindenwood territory. The Colonials put 15
shots on net in the first overtime frame compared to the Lions' six. Robert
Morris had one man-advantage in the extra frame, but could not capitalize on
the opportunity.
In the second
overtime period, both teams skated, again, to a 1-1 tie. The Colonials once
again dominated play in the period while the RMU penalty kill unit successfully
stifled the Lions' single power play chance of the period.
Finally, with
8:04 in the clock in third overtime period, RMU was able to capitalize on its
ninth power play chance of the contest to tally the game-winning goal. Junior
defenseman Kylie St. Louis (Windsor, Ontario / Southwest Wildcats) passed off to sophomore forward Rebecca Vint (Caledon, Ontario / Brampton
Jr. Thunder), who skated the puck into the offensive zone. Vint skated
behind the net then wrapped around to hit Delaney with a pass on the right
post. Delaney buried the puck into the net for her second game-winning goal of
the season and her first power play goal. The assist for St. Louis is her
seventh of the year, second in the past two games. Vint has now extended her
point streak to four consecutive games as she registered her 16th assist of the
season. The goal marks the seventh of the season for Delaney and moves her into
ninth all-time in RMU program history with 24 career goals. Delaney is also now
tied for seventh all-time with four career game-winning goals.
Today's
contest sets a new RMU program record for longest game played at 108 minutes.
The Colonials have never skated in a three overtime contest before today's
game. RMU also reset the program record for shots on goal in a single-game with
92. The Colonials shattered the previous record of 63 shots that was achieved
last weekend in game one against Penn State.
Senior
netminder Kristen DiCiocco (Niagara
Falls, Ontario / Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres) earned the victory in net for RMU
this afternoon. The senior stopped 41 of the 42 shots she faced in the contest
to set a season-high for saves in a single game. DiCiocco recorded a .976 save
percentage in her 34th career win.
Lindenwood's freshman
goaltender Nicole Hensley set a new NCAA record for saves in a single-contest
with 90 saves in today's contest.
RMU and
Lindenwood will faceoff tomorrow, Saturday, March 2 at 2:05 p.m. at the RMU
Island Sports Center for game two of the CHA Tournament first round series.
