Ottawa, Ontario – The Robert Morris University women's hockey alum Brianne McLaughlin and two-year assistant with the Colonial hockey program earned a gold medal at the 2013 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Women's World Championship as Team USA defeated Canada, 3-2 in the World Championship contest.
The gold medal marks McLaughlin's second World Championship gold as she was part of the 2011 Team USA that placed first in the IIFH Women's World Championship in Switzerland. In 2010 McLaughlin took part in the Olympic Games and contributed to team USA's silver medal performance. McLaughlin also earned another silver medal at the 2012 IIFH Women's World Championship allowing her to total four medals throughout three years of international competition.
In this year's IIFH World Championships, McLaughlin led the Red, White and Blue to a win over Finland on April 3rd. The netminder totaled 11 saves in the contest while playing between the pipes for all 60 minutes of the contest.
McLaughlin has served as an assistant coach with the RMU women's hockey team for the past two season, before coaching McLaughlin had a storied career with the Colonials. In 120 career games for Robert Morris, McLaughlin stopped a NCAA-record 3,809 shots, a figure that is more than 200 clear of the closest netminder. McLaughlin was a four-time All-CHA award winner and also earned national defensive player of the week honors on three occasions in her career. She led RMU to one of the biggest wins in school history Oct. 3, 2008 when she made a single-game school record 63 saves to lead the Colonials to a stunning road upset of No. 3 Minnesota. McLaughlin recorded at least 40 saves in 27 contests in her RMU career and stopped at least 50 shots on eight occasions.
McLaughlin remains the only student-athlete from Robert Morris to compete in the Olympic Games.
