Colonials Open NEC Tourney With 4-0 Win

The Robert Morris University women's tennis team opened the 2013 Northeast Conference Tournament Thursday afternoon with a 4-0 victory over No. 9 seed Monmouth in a feed-in match at Mercer County Park in West Windsor, N.J.

RMU claimed the doubles point and also picked up singles victories at the No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6 singles flights to claim the win and advance to face No. 1 seed Fairleigh Dickinson Friday.

Junior Carolina Mourao Teixeira (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil) earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Nicole Lippens at the No. 1 flight, while freshman Dounia Zinbi (Halle, Belgium) picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win over Sarah Turner at No. 5.

In the final singles match completed, senior Isabella Novella (Santo Andre, Brazil) defeated Emily Ellis at No. 6, 6-0 and 6-1.

In doubles action, Robert Morris picked up victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 flights to secure the doubles point.

Mourao Teixeira and Novella teamed up at No. 3 to defeat Turner and Liz D'Arcy, 8-1, while seniors Samantha Alves (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil) and Clarissa Chen (Winnipeg, Manitoba / Winnipeg Secondary) posted an 8-4 victory over Ashley Sandler and Dana Ferrari.

The victory helped the Colonials improve to 4-17 overall on the 2012-13 campaign.
