Moon Township, Pa. - Robert Morris University men's basketball head coach Andrew Toole announced today the program's 2013-14 recruiting class, which includes three freshmen and a trio of junior college transfers.
Joining RMU for the 2013-14 campaign are freshman guard Britton Lee (Philadelphia, Pa. / Math, Civics & Sciences), junior guards Desjuan Newton (Seattle, Wash. / Central Arizona College) and Charles Oliver (Scotch Plains, N.J. / Lakeland Community College), freshman guard Kavon Stewart (Paterson, N.J. / Hudson Catholic), sophomore forward Aaron Tate (New Bern, N.C. / Dodge City Community College) and freshman forward Jeremiah Worthem (Philadelphia, Pa. / Math, Civics & Sciences).
"There's a definite sense of excitement with our latest recruiting class and incoming student-athletes," Toole said. "I think what we've done with this class is addressed areas where we need improvement and at the same time, the class fits in the framework of what's made us successful the last six years."
The freshmen trio of Lee, Stewart and Worthem signed their National Letters of Intent in the early signing period in November of 2012, while Newton, Oliver and Tate each signed NLI's with RMU in the spring. In total, Robert Morris brings in four guards and a pair of forwards.
"We've added a good group of guards that can play to their respective strengths," Toole said. "Kavon is a pure point guard that owns incredible quickness and great floor vision, while Britton has a scorer's mentality and will be a solid combo guard for us. What I really like about both of them is that they are extremely good defenders on the ball.
"Desjuan is an energetic, aggressive slashing guard with great basketball instincts," Toole said. "He's a glue guy that makes winning plays for his teammates. With Charles, we hope he fills a void for us on the perimeter. He's got good size and strength and will have the ability to hunt shots and make plays.
"Aaron is a tough, physical defender who will address our needs on the backboards and has a nice shooting touch, while Jeremiah is a versatile, inside-out player that will bring toughness and an edge to our lineup," Toole said. "Jeremiah has a natural ability to score around the rim, but both he and Aaron will be an asset for our rotation."
The recruiting class joins a group of two returning starters and six letterwinners from a 2012-13 Robert Morris squad that finished with an overall record of 24-11 (.686) and claimed its 10th Northeast Conference regular-season title with a mark of 14-4 (.778) in league play.
The Colonials advanced to the postseason for the fifth time in the last six years in 2012-13, advancing to the second round of the 2013 National Invitation Tournament (NIT) after earning a 59-57 victory over Kentucky (3/19/13) at the Charles L. Sewall Center in front of 3,444 fans, the largest crowd in school history. In the second round of the NIT, Robert Morris dropped a 77-68 decision at Providence (3/25/13).
Returning as starters for RMU in 2013-14 are forwards Lucky Jones (Newark, N.J. / St. Anthony) and Mike McFadden (Newark, N.J. / Technology).
Jones enters his junior season next year as RMU's active leader in both scoring (691 points) and rebounding (416) and needs 306 points and 84 boards, respectively, to become the 13th player in school history to eclipse career totals of 1,000 points and 500 rebounds. In 2012-13 he averaged 11.6 points and a team-high 6.0 rebounds per game en route to earning All-NEC Third Team accolades.
McFadden owns career totals of 643 points and 300 rebounds entering his final season of eligibility in 2013-14. In 33 contests in 2012-13, McFadden produced averages of 8.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per contest while shooting 56.5 percent (109-for-193) from the field, which ranked fourth in the NEC.
Robert Morris also returns its leading scorer from last season in guard Karvel Anderson (Elkhart, Ind. / Glen Oaks Community College). In 2012-13, Anderson averaged 12.5 points per game on the strength of a team-high 82 three-pointers, which established an RMU single-season record by a member of the junior class.
RMU enters the 2013-14 campaign with an overall record of 141-67 (.678) over the last six seasons, both a school and NEC record. Over that span, the Colonials rank eighth among mid-major programs in victories, tied with Davidson.
