Van Schie Breaks School Record in Heptathlon

The Robert Morris University women's outdoor track & field team continued its 2013 campaign this past weekend by taking part in the IC4A/ECAC Championships in Princeton, N.J.


Sophomore Tara Van Schie (Haarlem, Netherlands / Driehuis NH) established a new school record in the heptathlon, compiling 4,441 points to finish ninth. She broke her own school record of 4,403 points that she posted last year at Florida State.

Van Schie won the shot put as part heptathlon, posting a tally of 12.54 meters (41'1.75") to outlast Saija Bikanova of Connecticut, who finished at 12.53 meters (41'1.50"). The performance earned Van Schie 697 points.

In the 100-meter hurdles as part of the heptathlon, Van Schie finished sixth with a time of 15.11 seconds to earn 827 points, her highest total in any event. She also earned 785 points as part of the 200-meter dash thanks to a time of 26.14 seconds. In her other track event as part of the heptathlon, Van Schie finished with a time of 2:47.42 for 491 points.

In other field events as part of the heptathlon, Van Schie claimed 11th in the long jump at 5.11 meters (16'9.25") to earn 589 points, as well as 12th in the high jump at 1.49 meters (4'10.50") to log 610 points. In the javelin, Van Schie's final tally of 28.19 meters (92'6") helped her earn ninth place and collect 442 points.

Also at the IC4A/ECAC Championships for Robert Morris, sophomore Aubree Ray (Middletown, Pa. / Middletown Area) and Rachael Kotula (East Berlin, Pa. / Bermudian Springs) competed in the discus and the javelin, respectively.

Ray posted a throw of 45.88 meters (150'6") in the discus to place 10th, while Kotula finished 12th in the javelin thanks to a toss of 41.28 meters (135'5").

The Colonials now gear up for the 2013 NCAA East Regional Championships, which will be held Saturday, May 25 through Monday, May 27, in Greensboro, N.C.
