RMU Surges Past Sacred Heart for Fifth Straight Win

Colonials match best Northeast Conference start in school history at 5-0 with victory

Six players scored in double figures and the Robert Morris University men's basketball team stretched its winning streak to five Thursday thanks to a 91-65 victory over Sacred Heart at the Charles L. Sewall Center.

RMU evened its overall record at 10-10 with the win and matched its best start in Northeast Conference play in school history at 5-0, while the Pioneers slipped to 4-16 overall and 1-4 in league play. Robert Morris also started the 1990-91 and 2005-06 seasons 5-0 in conference play.

Louis Montes buried a three-pointer just 21 seconds into the game to give Sacred Heart an early 3-2 lead, but the Colonials responded with a 14-2 run that opened up their first double-digit lead of the contest, 16-5.

Sophomore forward Stephan Hawkins (Gary, Ind. / Bowman Academy) scored the first seven points of the contest for Robert Morris, while senior guard Karvel Anderson (Elkhart, Ind. / Glen Oaks Community College) converted a three-point play to give RMU an 11-point advantage.

Sacred Heart weathered the storm and pulled to within three, 18-15, thanks to a 10-2 surge of its own as Steve Glowiak came off the bench to score eight points for the Pioneers, hitting a pair of three-pointers.

Hawkins came through with a dunk off a feed from freshman guard Kavon Stewart (Paterson, N.J. / Hudson Catholic) to push RMU's advantage to 20-15, and the Colonials were able to keep the Pioneers at bay.

A three-pointer from Phil Gaetano of SHU with 5:42 left before halftime made it 32-26 in favor of Robert Morris, but a 16-5 surge gave the Colonials a 48-31 advantage with 37 seconds left before the break. Five different players scored for RMU, including four points at the stripe from Stewart and a pair of layups from Anderson.

Robert Morris owned a 15-point lead at intermission, 48-33, and never were threatened in the second half, owning its largest lead with 5:14 to play when senior guard Anthony Myers-Pate (Washington, D.C. / Charis Prep) gave the Colonials an 86-54 cushion thanks to converting a pair at the free-throw line.

The Colonials received a balancing scoring attack, as junior forward Lucky Jones (Newark, N.J. / St. Anthony) led the way by recording his second straight double-double and fifth of his career with 18 points and 11 rebounds. He finished 5-for-10 shooting from the field and 7-for-9 at the free-throw line and also posted two assists and two steals.

Anderson added 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals, while junior guard Charles Oliver (Scotch Plains, N.J. / Lakeland Community College) contributed 13 points off the bench.

Hawkins tied a career high with 12 points and grabbed four boards, while Stewart and Myers-Pate each finished with 11 points. Stewart also recorded a team-high five assists and a pair of steals while tying a career high in points.

As a team, RMU shot 53.6 percent (30-for-56) from the field and 75 percent (27-for-36) at the charity stripe while owning a 31-29 advantage on the glass. 

Louis Montes led all scorers in the game with 23 points for Sacred Heart, while Glowiak added 14 points off the bench.

Robert Morris continues a four-game homestand Saturday, Jan. 25, with a 4:00 p.m. tip against Wagner at the Sewall Center.
