Loretto, Pa. – The
Robert Morris University men's basketball team concluded a perfect three-game road trip Thursday night with a 66-60 victory over Saint Francis U. at DeGol Arena.
In earning their third straight win, the Colonials improved to 15-11 overall on the 2013-14 campaign, including 10-1 in the Northeast Conference. The Red Flash slipped to 7-17 overall and 5-6 in league action.
Holding a 47-39 lead with 12:49 to play after a layup from junior guard
David Appolon (Philadelphia, Pa. / Imhotep Charter), the Red Flash reeled off a 12-4 run to tie the game, 51-51, at the 5:12 mark of the second half. Stephon Wyatt started the surge with a three-pointer, while Earl Brown capped it with a layup.
RMU kept SFU at bay at the free-throw line, as Appolon hit the back end of a pair of attempts, while junior forward
Lucky Jones (Newark, N.J. / St. Anthony) knocked down a pair to give the Colonials a 54-51 edge with 4:09 remaining.
Senior guard
Karvel Anderson (Elkhart, Ind. / Glen Oaks Community College) then came through for Robert Morris, hitting a pair of mid-range jumpers on back-to-back possessions, the second of which gave the Colonials a 58-53 cushion with 1:51 to go.
Robert Morris was able to seal the win at the free-throw line, going 8-for-8 at the stripe in the final 36 seconds, as Anderson, Appolon, Jones and senior guard
Anthony Myers-Pate (Washington, D.C. / Charis Prep) each hit a pair.
Jones helped get the Colonials off to a hot start, knocking down a pair of three-pointers in the opening 1:04 of action as Robert Morris jumped out to a 12-5 lead. A 10-0 surge helped Saint Francis U. grab its first lead of the contest, 15-14, thanks to a dunk from Ronnie Drinnon.
Anderson answered Drinnon's dunk with a jumper, but Drinnon came right back with a jumper of his own to push the Red Flash back in front, 17-16, at the 8:10 mark of the first half. Anderson scored four of the game's next six points to give the Colonials a 22-17 edge and never trailed the rest of the game.
On 6-of-10 shooting in the first half, Anderson scored 15 points before halftime in helping give RMU a 33-29 edge at the break. He finished with a game-high 28 points, converting 11 of his 17 shots from the field, including 2-for-4 from beyond the arc, while hitting all four of his attempts from the chalk. He also added four rebounds, two assists and a career-high four steals.
Jones also finished in double figures for Robert Morris with 12 points while grabbing a game-high nine rebounds, while sophomore forward
Stephan Hawkins (Gary, Ind. / Bowman Academy) chipped in eight points and six boards.
The Red Flash was led by Brown, who registered 17 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Wyatt also reached double figures for Saint Francis U. with 11 points.
Robert Morris shot 54.8 percent (23-for-42) from the field on the night, a season-high against a league foe, and also outrebounded the SFU, 32-22.
The Colonials return home to the Charles L. Sewall Center and open a three-game homestand Saturday, Feb. 15, by welcoming Mount St. Mary's for a 4:00 p.m. tip.
