Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. – The
Robert Morris University men's basketball team concluded its swing through the Big Apple Saturday afternoon with a 72-50 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn at the Pope P.E. Center.
In earning its first back-to-back victories in Brooklyn, N.Y., since the 1999-2000 season, RMU improved to 14-11 overall and 9-1 in the Northeast Conference, while the Terriers slipped to 15-10 overall and 6-4 in conference play.
The Colonials never trailed in the contest, hitting their first five shots from the field in jumping out to a 13-4 lead at the 16:34 mark of the first half. Junior forward
Lucky Jones (Newark, N.J. / St. Anthony) provided the offensive fireworks, scoring the first 11 points for Robert Morris, while junior guard
David Appolon (Philadelphia, Pa. / Imhotep Charter) provided a tomahawk dunk.
RMU grabbed its first double-digit lead with 10:01 to play in the first half on a layup by senior guard
Anthony Myers-Pate (Washington, D.C. / Charis Prep), and the biggest lead in the first half for the Colonials came with 3:56 remaining before the break, 35-21, when Myers-Pate fed sophomore forward
Stephan Hawkins (Gary, Ind. / Bowman Academy) for a layup.
Robert Morris led, 39-26, at halftime behind Jones, who scored 18 points in the opening stanza on 7-of-8 shooting from the field, including a 4-for-5 performance from beyond the arc. Hawkins, meanwhile, supplied nine points, while Myers-Pate recorded seven assists.
Both teams came out sluggish in the second half, but the Colonials stretched their lead to 48-29 with 14:20 remaining after layup from freshman guard
Kavon Stewart (Paterson, N.J. / Hudson Catholic) and a pair of free throws from Appolon.
St. Francis Brooklyn followed with an 11-4 surge to close to within 52-40 after a three-pointer from Yunus Hopkinson, but junior guard
Charles Oliver (Scotch Plains, N.J. / Lakeland Community College) helped stem the tide for RMU by burying a three-pointer from the corner on a feed from senior guard
Karvel Anderson (Elkhart, Ind. / Glen Oaks Community College) to open up a 55-40 advantage for the Colonials.
Amdy Fall would help the Terriers trim their deficit to 57-43 after a pair of free throws with 6:45 to play, but Robert Morris pulled away by scoring the next 10 points of the contest, including eight straight points from Anderson.
Jones would take home game-high honors in scoring with 18 points for the Colonials, while Anderson scored all 13 of his points in the second half. Hawkins added 11 points, while Stewart contributed nine points and four rebounds.
SFC was led by Jalen Cannon and Aleksander Isailovic, who each scored 10 points. Cannon added a game-high nine boards and five assists, but the Terriers shot just 34 percent (18-for-53) from the field on the afternoon, including 27.8 percent (5-for-18) from beyond the arc.
Robert Morris will conclude a three-game road trip Thursday, Feb. 13, when it travels east on Route 22 for a 7:00 p.m. tip against in-state rival Saint Francis U. at DeGol Arena in Loretto, Pa.
