Pittsburgh, Pa. –
Robert Morris University women's hockey freshman forward
Brittany Howard (St. Thomas, Ontario / Burlington Jr. Barracudas) gave the Colonials their second record-breaking performance in as many games, but it wasn't enough as Syracuse defeated RMU this afternoon, 3-1.
Howard tallied her 23
rd assist of the season on a third period goal, which surpassed the previous record of 22 set by now-junior forward
Rebecca Vint (Caledon, Ontario / Brampton Junior Thunder) in 2011-12.
No. 9/8 Robert Morris (21-6-3, 10-4-2 CHA) dropped its third-straight Saturday game after beginning the year 10-0-0 on the weekend's first day. Syracuse (16-11-3, 7-6-3 CHA) evened up both the regular-season (1-1-2) and all-time series (9-9-6) against the Colonials with the victory.
The Orange didn't take long to dent the scoreboard as Jessica Sibley banged home a rebound from Akane Hosoyamada just 26 seconds into the contest.
Syracuse added two more in the second period to make it 3-0. Julie Knerr gathered a Sibley pass from behind the net and fired one in from the point six minutes into the frame. Knerr then knotted her second off another assist from Sibley at the 14:11 mark of the stanza.
The Colonials cut the Orange lead to two with an early power play goal in the final period. Howard found the puck after a face-off win and then passed it to Vint, who pushed it over to senior assistant captain
Thea Imbrogno (Etobicoke, Ontario / Mississauga Jr. Chiefs). Imbrogno took advantage of an off-balance Jenesica Drinkwater and buried the puck behind the Syracuse goaltender for her 12
th goal of the season.
Drinkwater made 37 saves for the Orange, while freshman goaltender
Jessica Dodds (London, Ontario / London Jr. Devilettes) stopped 16 of 19 shots for RMU.
Robert Morris will end its regular-season road schedule next weekend with a trip to RIT. The first meeting between the Colonials and Tigers is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Friday.
