RMU Finishes 1-3 in Florida Trip to Orlando

Colonials earn 5-2 victory over Siena

Moon Township, Pa. – The Robert Morris University men's tennis squad posted a record of 1-3 in its annual spring break swing in Orlando, Fla., last week, falling to Grand Valley State, Valparaiso and South Dakota State but earning a 5-2 win over Siena.

Against Siena, the Colonials posted singles victories at the No. 2 and the No.3 through No. 5 singles flights to earn the win.

At No. 2, sophomore Matheus Neves Ferreira (Sao Paulo, Brazil / Collegio Mackenzie) earned a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Peter Collins, while freshman Bruno Russo (Sao Paulo, Brazil / Bio Xii) defeated Eric Sumanaru at No. 4, 6-0 and 6-2.

Sophomore Juan Andres Hirmas (Santiago, Chile / Monte Tabor) was victorious at No. 5 thanks to a 6-4, 6-4 win over Darren Reisch, while sophomore Fernando Leite (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil / Notre Dame) knocked off Matthew Funiciello at No. 6 in three sets to help the Colonials secure the win, 6-2, 2-6 and 1-0 (10-7).

Russo was 3-1 in singles play during RMU's spring break swing, as he opened play in Florida with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Quinn Sylow of Grand Valley State before earning the win over Sumanaru of Siena. He also picked up a 2-6, 6-4 and 11-8 win over Henrique Pereira of South Dakota State to close out the trip in Orlando.

RMU returns north and opens a stretch of five matches away from home by opening Northeast Conference action against in-state rival Saint Francis U. in a match that will take place in Emmitsburg, Md., Friday, March 14. The match is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.
