RMU Posts 2-1 Record in Swing Through Maryland

Colonials open Northeast Conference play with 1-1 record

The Robert Morris University men's tennis team went 2-1 in its swing through Maryland this weekend, dropping a 6-1 decision to in-state rival Saint Francis U. in a neutral site match that was played at Mount St. Mary's Friday afternoon before rebounding to earn a 4-3 victory at Coppin State Saturday and closing out the weekend with a 4-3 win at the Mount Sunday.

The 2-1 mark improves the Colonials to 3-8 overall on the 2013-14 season, including 1-1 in the Northeast Conference.

Sophomore Matheus Neves Ferreira (Sao Paulo, Brazil / Collegio Mackenzie) earned victories in both of his singles matches over the weekend, posting RMU's lone win against the Red Flash with a 7-6 (4-0), 3-6 and 6-3 victory over Rodrigo Tico Fernandez at the No. 2 singles flight. Against the Mount, he defeated Austin Blake at No. 2, also in three sets, 7-5, 3-6 and 6-3.

Against Coppin State Saturday afternoon, RMU secured the victory thanks to wins at the No. 1, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles flights.

Senior Angus Thomson (Brisbane, Australia / Brisbane Grammar School) knocked off Oleksiy Krylchuk at No. 1 in three sets, 6-3, 3-6 and 6-2, while freshman Bruno Russo (Sao Paulo, Brazil / Bio Xii) defeated Reginald Robinson at No. 3, 7-6 and 6-1.

At the No. 4 singles flight, sophomore Juan Andres Hirmas (Santiago, Chile / Monte Tabor) earned a 6-3, 6-0 win over Roderick Peyton, and sophomore Fernando Leite (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil / Notre Dame) defeated Tre'vonne Peyton at No. 5, 7-6 and 6-4.

In evening its Northeast Conference record at 1-1 with its win at Mount St. Mary's Sunday, joining Neves Ferreira in earning singles victories were Thomson, Russo and Hirmas.

Thomson knocked off Adam Salam at No. 1 in three sets and in come-from-behind fashion, 4-6, 6-3 and 6-2, while Russo posted a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Peter Salomon at No. 4. At the No. 5 singles flight, Hirmas needed three sets to defeat Mike Zabetakis to help the Colonials earn the win, 6-1, 4-6 and 6-4.

Robert Morris stays on the road for its next pair of matches with a two-game swing against NEC foes. The Colonials will visit Sacred Heart Saturday, March 21, before traveling to St. Francis Brooklyn Sunday, March 22, for a league match.
