Winning Streak Reaches Four For Colonials

RMU earns pair of NEC road wins to improve to 3-1 against league opponents

Moon Township, Pa. – The Robert Morris University men's tennis team stretched its winning streak to a season-high four this weekend with a pair of Northeast Conference road victories. The Colonials opened the weekend with a 5-2 win at Sacred Heart Saturday, followed by a 6-1 win at St. Francis Brooklyn Sunday afternoon.

Thanks to the pair of victories RMU improves to 5-9 overall on the 2013-14 campaign, including 3-1 against league foes.

Against the Pioneers, Robert Morris picked up singles victories at the No. 1, No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 flights while also earning the doubles point.

At No. 1, senior Angus Thomson (Brisbane, Australia / Brisbane Grammar School) defeated Brian Power, 6-4 and 6-3, while sophomore Matheus Neves Ferreira (Sao Paulo, Brazil / Collegio Mackenzie) earned a three-set win over Justin Pagan, 7-6, 2-6 and 6-2, at No. 2.

Bruno Russo (Sao Paulo, Brazil / Bio Xii) continued his solid freshman campaign by defeating Kevin Budrawich in three sets, 4-6, 6-4 and 6-0 at the No. 3 singles flight, while sophomore Juan Andres Hirmas (Santiago, Chile / Monte Tabor) defeated Luke Bagi, 7-6 and 7-5, at No. 5.

Thomson and Russo teamed up at the No. 1 doubles flight against Sacred Heart to defeat Matt Dean and Power, 8-5, while the No. 3 doubles flight that featured Neves Ferreira and Hirmas secured the doubles point with an 8-4 victory over Pagan and Budrawich.

Against the Terriers Sunday afternoon, RMU earned the doubles point and swept the No. 2 through No. 6 singles flights to earn a 6-1 win.

The No. 1 doubles team of Thomson and Russo knocked off Victor Blasco and Sacha Singh, 8-3, while Neves Ferreira and Hirmas were again victorious at No. 3 with an 8-0 victory over James Wisniewski and James Chung.

In singles action, Neves Ferreira, Hirmas and Russo each stretched their individual winning streaks to four. Neves Ferreira defeated Franc Terns-Campius at No. 2, 7-5 and 6-2, while Russo and Hirmas each posted 6-0, 6-0 victories. Russo defeated Sing at No. 4, while Hirmas defeated Chung at No. 5.

At the No. 3 singles flight, freshman Eduardo Rodriguez (Sao Paulo, Brazil / Amorim) earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Andrea Proto, while sophomore Fernando Leite (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil / Notre Dame) defeated James Wisniewski, 6-0 and 6-0, at No. 6.

Robert Morris looks to extend its winning streak when it opens a three-match homestand to conclude the 2013-14 regular season Saturday, March 29, with an 11:00 a.m. match against Dayton at the North Athletic Complex.
