Colonials Fall, 4-1, in NEC Tournament Quarterfinals

Moon Township, Pa. – The Robert Morris University men's tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 5 seed Sacred Heart Thursday in the quarterfinals of the 2014 Northeast Conference Championships in West Windsor, N.J., at the Mercer County Tennis Center.

The Colonials conclude the 2013-14 campaign with an overall record of 5-10.

Picking up the lone victory for RMU was sophomore Fernando Leite (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil / Notre Dame), who posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Luka Bagi at the No. 6 singles flight.

The most competitive match of the afternoon came at the No. 5 singles, as sophomore Juan Andres Hirmas (Santiago, Chile / Monte Tabor) battled Anthony Savio before falling, 7-6 (7-4) and 7-6 (7-5).

The Pioneers sealed the win thanks to wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 singles flights, as Justin Pagan defeated sophomore Matheus Neves Ferreira (Sao Paulo, Brazil / Collegio Mackenzie), 6-2 and 6-3, while Kevin Budrawich posted a 6-1, 6-4 victory over freshman Eduardo Rodriguez (Sao Paulo, Brazil / Amorim).

Hirmas posted the best season for the Colonials in 2013-14, finishing with an overall record of 10-11, including an 8-7 mark in dual-match action. He played primarily at the No. 5 singles flight, finishing 5-6.

Hirmas also teamed with Neves Ferreira to go 8-6 in doubles action, including a 7-5 mark at the No. 3 flight.

Also posting an 8-6 record in doubles action for Robert Morris in 2013-14 was senior Angus Thomson (Brisbane, Australia / Brisbane Grammar School) and freshman Bruno Russo (Sao Paulo, Brazil / Bio Xii), including a 7-5 mark at the No. 1 flight and a perfect 4-0 mark against league opponents.
