Ryan Prokay won the individual title and the
Robert Morris University men's golf team claimed the team championship at the Red Flash Invitational, hosted by Saint Francis University, at Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown, Pa. Prokay and sophomores
Dan Maier and
Matt Gurska all had career low rounds helping RMU to a five-stroke victory. The tournament was slated to go 54 holes, but the final 18 were canceled due to weather, giving RMU the team championship and Prokay the individual title after the 36-hole performances.
Prokay opened play with a 67, three strokes under par on the 6,880-yard par-70 layout. The score is the lowest of the junior's career and is the third-lowest number in team history. He followed up his first round record score with a 74 and won with a 141 two-round total, two strokes ahead of the next closest competitor.
As a team, RMU accumulated a 287 team score, also the third-lowest number in team history. RMU followed up with a 292 tallying the lowest score in each of the first two rounds. The Colonials, with a 579, defeated second-place Cleveland State by five strokes. Humber is a distant third with a 608 total.
Junior
Santiago Mejia sat third overall. He opened up play with a 73 before picking up one stroke in second round action for a 72 and two-round total of 145. Maier had the best round of of his career with a 71 in the event's first round. Maier shot a 75 in round two and finished fourth with a total of 146.
Gurska's career-low 71 was in the second round of play, helping him to a 36-hole total of 149 that allowed him to finish in ninth place. The sophomore opened play with a 78 before finding seven strokes in round two. Junior
Garrett Browning led the field with two eagles as he shot rounds of 76 for a 152 total, tying for 15th Browning is tied for 15th position.
Freshmen
Mac Cavanaugh and
Dean Hitt both played as individuals. Cavanaugh tied for 19th (77-76=153) while Hitt tied for 37th 978-82=160).
