Varsity 8 Earns Third, Novice Posts Second Straight Victory

The Robert Morris University women's rowing team wrapped up competition at the Sacred Heart Invitational Sunday in Fairfield, Conn., with the varsity eight claiming third and the novice eight finishing first.

"I am really proud of our team right now," head coach Midge McPhail-Burks said. "Each boat is learning each time they row down the race course whether the crew is please or unhappy with the outcome. We have a lot of work to do but each rower knows that and is excited to put in the work."

The first varsity eight finished with a time of 8:14.11 to claim third, trailing only Fairfield (8:05.10) and Marist (8:09.21) while finishing ahead of Canisius (8:23.89), Iona (9:04.70) and Sacred Heart (10:41.02).

The student-athletes to make up the first varsity eight boat for the Colonials were junior Laura Mooradian (St. Catharines, Ontario / Denis Morris) as the coxswain and junior Kristin Fay (Philadelphia, Pa. / Philadelphia), sophomore Caitlin Ryan (Pittsford, N.Y. / Pittsford Sutherland), junior Heather Hodges (Valencia, Pa. / Mars Area), freshman Erin Gunn (Buffalo, N.Y. / Holy Angels Academy), juniors Kelsey Porter (Mount Pleasant, Pa. / Mount Pleasant) and Brianna Hellier (Beaver, Pa. / Beaver Area), senior Megan Coleman (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Northgate) and sophomore Kelley Bittner (Gibsonia, Pa. / Hampton).

The second varsity eight boat posted a time of 9:05.06 to finish fourth. Winning that race was Marist, which posted a time of 8:42.60.

Serving as the coxswain of the second RMU varsity eight boat was sophomore Angelica Tomlinson (Dayton, Ohio / Chaminade-Julienne). Also featured in the boat were senior Gretchen Gailey (Beaver, Pa. / Beaver Area), junior Julie Miller (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Catholic), sophomores Samantha Gunn (Buffalo, N.Y. / Holy Angels Academy) and Rebekah Noorlag (Beaver, Pa. / Beaver County Christian), junior Erica Sablofski (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Plum), sophomore Paige Oster (Mantua, Ohio / Cuyahoga Valley Christian), freshman Tina Sahr (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Catholic) and sophomore Donna Muschar (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Perry).

The Robert Morris varsity four also placed fourth, crossing the finish line with a time of 9:37.85. Marist earned first with a time of 9:12.60.

Comprising RMU's lineup in the varsity four were freshmen Katelyn Goodman (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona) and Shannon Casey (Eagle River, Alaska / Frontier Charter), junior Cassandra Grafton (Hartstown, Pa. / Jamestown Area) and sophomore Bridget Robinson (Voorhees, N.J. / Eastern), while junior Victoria Lomax (Willingboro, N.J. / John W. Callahan Catholic) served as coxswain.

In the novice eight, Robert Morris claimed victory for the second time in as many days, recording a time of 7:53.41 to outlast Fairfield (7:10.45), Sacred Heart (8:44.42) and Iona (9:11.46).

Serving as the coxswain for the RMU novice eight was freshman Olivia Bello (Voorhees, N.J. / Eastern), and she was joined in the boat by Goodman, Casey and freshmen Hannah Miller (Valencia, Pa. / Mars Area), Maddi Lewis (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom), Emily Engle-Young (Holbrook, Pa. / West Greene), Taylor Andree (Erie, Pa. / McDowell), Lindsey Lose (Birmingham, Ala. / Hoover) and Taylor Childers (Marlton, N.J. / Cherokee).

Up next for RMU is the Spring Metropolitan Regatta, which takes place in New York, N.Y., Saturday, April 12.
