RMU Goes 2-1 in Swing Through Maryland

Colonials split first two matches of season against Northeast Conference foes

Moon Township, Pa. – The Robert Morris University women's tennis snapped a 10-match losing streak by posting a 2-1 record this weekend in its swing through Maryland.

The Colonials dropped a 6-1 decision in its first Northeast Conference match of the season Friday afternoon by bounced back to earn a 7-0 win at Coppin State Saturday. RMU concluded play on th weekend by earning a 5-2 win at Mount St. Mary's to even its league record on the year at 1-1.

Senior Carolina Mourao Teixeira (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil / Cruzeiro) picked up RMU's lone point against the Red Flash with a three-set victory over Rafaela Panizza, 3-6, 6-1 and 1-0 (7-0). Mourao Teixeira also defeated Carentxa Goode of Coppin State, 6-0 and 6-0, and finished 2-1 on the weekend in singles action.

Also picking up a pair of victories in singles action over the weekend for RMU were freshmen Larissa Kiyoku (Brasilia, Brazil / Anglo Americans), Diana Mirceta (Hamilton, Ontario / Glendale Secondary) and Alina Schibol (Hamburg, Germany).

Kiyoku played at the No. 3 singles flight, earning a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ashley Milo of Coppin State and a three-set victory over Kelly Smith of the Mount, 6-4, 2-6 and 6-3.

Mirceta competed at No. 4 singles, defeating Katherine Chisholm of CSU, 6-3 and 6-0, before posting a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Taylor D'Agostino of Mount St. Mary's.

Schibol played at the No. 5 singles flight against Mount St. Mary's, defeating Erin Benefiel, 6-2 and 6-3, while earning a 6-0 and 6-1 victory over Miranda Taylor of Coppin State, also at No. 5.

Robert Morris continues league play with a pair of matches next weekend, as the Colonials visit Sacred Heart Friday, March 21, before traveling to New York, N.Y., to take on St. Francis Brooklyn Saturday, March 22.
