Moon Township, Pa. – Sophomore Halley Morell (Brecksville, Ohio / Brecksville-Broadview Heights) of Robert Morris University was honored by the Northeast Conference Tuesday for her performance on the course and in the classroom, as she was selected as the 2014 NEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women's golf.

The first player in program history to garner the award, Morell was honored for owning a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.97 as a management major.

Named the 2014 NEC Co-Player of the Year in a vote of head coaches while also earning a spot on the 2014 All-NEC First Team, Morell led the league with a 78.0 stroke average during the 2013-14 campaign. Her mark established a new RMU single-season record, nearly two and-a-half strokes better than the previous mark.

In nine events during the year, Morell recorded a total of seven top 10 finishes, more than any other golfer in the NEC. Her lone victory of the season came at the RMU Colonial Classic in October of 2013, when she fired a two-day score of 157 to claim the individual title.

Morell also recorded a pair of second-place finishes during the year, including the Red Flash Invitational and the NEC Championships.

In addition to Morell being named the 2014 NEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women's golf, a total of 118 student-athletes were named to the 2014 NEC Spring Academic Honor Roll. To be eligible, student-athletes must have posted a cumulative GPA of 3.20 and be an active member of an officially recognized varsity team. Freshmen are eligible for the honor roll.

Of RMU's 118 student-athletes to be named to the 2014 NEC Spring Academic Honor Roll, a total of 38 of those were also selected to the 2014 NEC Spring Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll. To garner the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher.
