Fifth-Place Finish For Colonials at Cape Fear

Leland, N.C. – The Robert Morris University men's golf team collected a fifth place finish at the 2015 Cape Fear National Intercollegiate, the team's first full event of the spring season.
 
Gardner-Webb claimed the team championship with a three-round total of 886 on the 6,950-yard, par 72 layout in the meandering 18-hole layout in Brunswick Forest. Host Appalachian State stormed the course with a two-under par team score Monday to finish second with an 895. High Point was third (896) followed by Delaware (905), Robert Morris (914), St. Bonaventure (920), North Dakota (938), North Carolina Central (942), IUPUI (943), Nyack County and Eastern Illinois (947) and Green Bay (953).
 
Ryan Prokay led the Colonials with his fourth top-10 finish in five events this season. The senior finished sixth with a 221 total after carding a 73 Monday, his lowest score in the three-round event.  His final journey around the course didn't start the way he envisioned with four bogeys in the first five holes, but her recovered to birdie three of the final seven. He shot 74 in each of the first two rounds.
 
Santiago Mejia came home in 78 strokes, slipping from 12th to 19th in the final day of competition. After recording eight birdies and an eagle in the first two rounds, the senior tallied four bogeys and a double-bogey Monday to finish with a 227 total. Garrett Browning improved each and every round culminating in a 75 Monday. Added to rounds of 80 and 79, he came in 39th with a 234 total. He birdied three holes, but he also recorded a pair of double bogeys on the final nine holes.
 
Matt Gurska matched his second round score with the same number Monday – 78. His 236 total put him 43rd overall in the field of 71 golfers. Dan Maier finished his final round with an 84, his final number giving him a 239 total that put him 49th overall.
 
Playing in his second collegiate event as an individual, Mike McMorrow matched his season low score with a 73. He tallied birdies on three holes, including a two on the par-three 14th hole. The Monday mark was eight strokes better than his second round 81, and combined with an opening score of 75 gave him a 229 total that was 24th overall.
