MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Chuck Tragesser has showed his resilience in two Western Pennsylvania Golf Association (WPGA) events, securing a championship and earning low amateur honors in two separate tournaments despite facing challenging conditions and tough competition.
WPGA Spring Stroke Play Championship Victory
Tragesser claimed his first-ever victory in the
WPGA Spring Stroke Play Championship at Pittsburgh Field Club, triumphing in a one-hole playoff. He started strong with an opening round of 70. Although a difficult stretch of two bogeys and a double bogey on his final nine holes seemed to put him out of contention, he was surprised to find himself just two strokes off the lead after checking the leaderboard. He then rallied, finishing his round with two birdies and two pars for a score of 73, which propelled him into a playoff.
The playoff was held in the day's most challenging weather, as rain set in and temperatures dropped to the low 50s. Tragesser secured the win on the first playoff hole with a par, converting a long two-putt.Â
Low Amateur Honors at the WPGA Open Championship
Tragesser continued his strong performance by earning low amateur honors in the 122nd
WPGA Open Championship at Sewickley Heights Golf Club. He finished in a three-way tie for the runner-up spot with professionals Rob McClellan and Beau Titsworth, carding consistent rounds of 69-68-69 for a 7-under total of 206. His final round was particularly solid, with only one bogey over 18 holes, despite significant wind, rain, and lightning that led to multiple suspensions of play throughout the championship.
Tragesser handled the weather delays with composure, drawing on his experience from college golf and his recent win at the Spring Stroke Play Championship. His performance highlighted a strong showing by West Penn amateur players in the mixed professional and amateur competition.Â
