Matt Gurska carded a career-low round to lead Robert Morris University to first place after the first round of the 36-hole Seahawk Invitational at Quail Valley Golf Club in Littlestown, Pa. The Colonials team score of 299 (+11) leads the field by eight strokes at the par-72 layout.
Gurska blitzed the Quail Valley course with six birdies en route to the only under-par round of the day. His three-under 69 is a career-low and gives him a four-stroke lead in the individual race. Gurska leads the field in par-three (2.75, -1) and par-five scoring (4.25, -3) in addition to doubling up his nearest competitor in birdies.
Just behind him in the individual standings is teammate
Ryan Prokay who tallied three birdies on the day. His opening round 73 is tied with Wagner College's Kyle Sullivan for second.
Santiago Mejia also finds himself among the top-10 players in the field after using 77 strokes to round the circuit. That score places him seventh in the five-team, 29-player field.
Garrett Browning scored an 80 and is tied for 12th while
Dan Maier came home in 85 strokes, a number that puts him in 20th.
Playing as an individual in his first event of the spring,
Brett Pompeani is tied for 18th. He posted a first round 84.
Host Wagner College is second in the standings at 307 followed by LIU Brooklyn (314), Saint Francis U. (332) and St. Francis Brooklyn (368.)
