Gurska Sets Record In Leading RMU To Title

Littlestown, Pa. - Senior Matt Gurska finished off the finest tournament of his career and, based on score to par, the finest 36-hole tournament a member of the Robert Morris University men's golf team has played. Gurska was the medalist for the first time in his collegiate career and helped the Colonials to their second tournament victory of the season at the Seahawk Invitational.

Robert Morris finished 15 strokes better than the second place team in an event that featured five Northeast Conference foes. The Colonials two-day score was 600 on the par-72 layout at Quail Valley Golf Club. LIU Brooklyn took second with a 615 followed by host Wagner (617), Saint Francis U. (648) and St. Francis Brooklyn (714). Five of the Colonials six golfers finished in the top-10.

Tallying six birdies and a three-under par 69 in the opening round, Gurska tacked on three more birdies to his tournament leading total Monday. His final round of 70 gave him a 139, five-strokes under par and seven strokes ahead of his nearest competitor. The Hermitage, Pa.-native topped the field in birdies (9), par three scoring (2.88), par four scoring (4.05) and par five scoring (4.38) and was second with 24 pars.

His five-under is a new program record for a 36-hole tournament while the 139 is the second lowest stroke total. Gurska's score at the Seahawk Invitational marks a seven-stroke improvement over his previous best two-round total.

Ryan Prokay collected his fifth top-10 and third top-five showing of the season. He tied for fifth with a 152 carding rounds of 73 and 79. Garrett Browning found five strokes in the second round, cutting an opening round 80 to 75 to finish seventh with a 155.

Santiago Mejia tied with teammate Brett Pompeani for 10th in the final standings. Mejia shot 77-81 to card his score of 158. Pompeani, meanwhile, chopped 10 strokes from his first round score Monday. After an 84, the freshman posted a 74 Monday for a 158 while playing as an individual. His round two and 36-hole totals are both season bests for him.

Rounding out the Colonials scorers was Dan Maier in 18th. He moved up two slots in the overall standings as he too had a marked improvement in the event's second round. A 77 Monday was eight strokes better than his first round and gave him a 162 total.
