Robert Morris Claims Third NEC Championship

Four of five Colonials finish in event's top-10.

Daytona Beach, Fla. – The Robert Morris University men's golf team laid claim to the 2015 Northeast Conference Championship with a wire-to-wire victory at the LPGA International Hills Course in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Colonials pulled away from the field on the third and final day Sunday to win by 14 strokes. The championship is the team's third overall and first since winning back-to-back titles in 1995 and 1996.
 
Four of the Colonials five golfers had top-10 finishes as RMU led the field in birdies (34), pars (162), par four scoring (4.24) and par five scoring (5.07). Robert Morris fired a 295 on the final day, nine strokes better than second place Bryant. The Colonials finished with a three-day total of 892 while Bryant was second (906) and Fairleigh Dickinson and LIU Brooklyn tied for third (917). Central Connecticut State was fifth (929) followed by Wagner (933), Saint Francis U (935), Sacred Heart (947) and St. Francis Brooklyn (1,057).
 
After carding 75 in each of the first two rounds, senior Matt Gurska tallied 13 straight pars en route to a final round 72. His 222 total left him in fourth place and made him the top RMU finisher at the NEC Championships for the second straight season. The senior birdied the par-five 14th hole before a bogey on 17 put him back to even for the day.
 
First round leader Garrett Browning finished in a tie for fifth with a final day 75 that put him at 223 overall. The senior tallied birds on the par-four fourth hole and the par-three seventh leaving him even after nine holes before finishing with a 39 on the back nine. Browning was the only player in the field to finish under par on the par threes, a combined 1-under over the three rounds.
 
Seniors Ryan Prokay and Santiago Mejia tied for seventh place with 54-hole totals of 225. Mejia had the better final round. After opening with a double-bogey, he birdied three of the next four to get to one-under par through five holes. Another birdie on the 567-yard 16th hole in addition three bogeys gave Mejia a 73 on the final day.
 
Prokay, who finished just one-over to lead the field in par-four scoring, had a 75 on the final day. He scored a trio of birdies – on the fifth, 10th and16th holes – and also had six bogeys. Dan Maier rounded out the Robert Morris squad, carding a pair of birdies on the back nine Sunday. They both came on par-five holes as he came home in 85 strokes. His three-round score of 245 tied for 35th.
 
The Colonials automatically advance to the NCAA National Championships. The selections for the 2015 championship will be announced live on the Golf Channel during the airing of Morning Drive which begins at 10:00 a.m.
