Robert Morris Returns to CHA Action at Penn State

Colonials look for strong second half of conference season, starting with PSU

Pittsburgh, Pa. – In its long-awaited return to College Hockey America action, the Robert Morris University women's hockey team travels to State College, Pa. for a two-game series at conference foe Penn State on Friday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 23 at 2 p.m. at Pegula Ice Arena.

Robert Morris (12-8-4, 4-3-3) saw a five-game unbeaten streak snapped by No. 4 Quinnipiac in its final non-conference series of the season. The Colonials waged a late comeback after trailing 3-0, but fell to the Bobcats in Game 1, 3-2, and were ultimately swept by the top-ranked opponent after suffering a 2-0 setback on Saturday. RMU is set to compete in CHA play for the remainder of the season, and currently ranks third in the league standings.

Penn State (6-14-4, 2-4-4) split a series with RIT in its return to conference competition, dropping the first game, 3-0, and winning the second in overtime, 3-2. PSU is 2-4-0 in its last six appearances. The Nittany Lions are tied with Lindenwood for fourth place in the CHA standings, three points behind RMU.

Robert Morris versus Penn State
The Colonials prevail in the all-time series with the Nittany Lions, 11-2-1. Penn State tied and defeated Robert Morris earlier this season by scores of 2-2 and 5-1, respectively. Redshirt sophomore Brittany Howard and freshman Amber Rennie scored in Game 1 of that CHA series, and junior Mikaela Lowater tallied the lone RMU goal in Game 2. Robert Morris has not lost a game on the road at Penn State since the series between the two programs began.

New Year, Same Goals
Robert Morris closed the 2015 portion of the season on a high note with a tie and a win at league foe Lindenwood, and went on to ring in the New Year with a series sweep of non-conference opponent Providence. The Colonials are 2-2-0 thus far in 2016.

Where They Stack Up
Despite the preseason prediction of a fifth-place finish in the CHA standings, RMU currently checks in at No. 3 in the league, just three points behind second-place Syracuse and five points shy of league-leader Mercyhurst. The Colonials currently boast the most overall wins among CHA teams this season (12).

Moving On Up
With an assist in last Friday's 3-2 loss at No. 4 Quinnipiac, redshirt sophomore Brittany Howard improved to fifth all-time in individual career assists (44) at RMU. She is three points shy of tying Kristen Miles (2005-08) and Kelsey Thomas (2009-12) for fifth place in all-time career points.

Among the Ranks
RMU ranks among the top five in NCAA DI women's hockey in power-play goals (27; 2nd), power-play assists (53; 2nd), penalty kills (95; 1st), blocked shots (377; 2nd) and blocked shots per game (15.71; 1st). RMU boasts a top-10 scoring offense (tenth), power play (third), penalty kill (eighth) and combined special teams (seventh).
