Cope Signs with ECHL's Norfolk Admirals

Matt Cope joins the five other Colonials on ECHL rosters

Pittsburgh, Pa. - Robert Morris University sees its eighth player sign with a professional hockey team this week, as senior forward Matt Cope has inked a standard player's contract (SPC) with the Norfolk Admirals, the ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Edmonton Oilers.

Cope played 147 games for the Colonials, ranking sixth in program history. The senior from Lakewood, Colorado scored 78 points during his career on 28 goals and 50 assists. Cope is also sixth all-time in plus/music at RMU with a plus-37 rating. Cope has been a factor on the penalty kill, both in clearing the puck and scoring two shorthanded goals.

Cope's senior campaign was the best of his college career, scoring 32 points, finishing sixth in scoring on the NCAA's fourth highest scoring team. Cope ranked 21st in the nation in scoring among free agent senior forwards and was 15th in scoring in the Atlantic Hockey conference this season. Cope's power play abilities came through this season as he played on a unit ranked first in the nation throughout much of the season, producing five power play goals and seven power play assists.

"I'm very happy for Matt," said Robert Morris head coach Derek Schooley. "He plays hard and is very good in the tough areas. This will be a very good opportunity for him to prove himself at the next level."

Cope has won five championship trophies with the Colonials, two Three Rivers Classic tournament championships, two Atlantic Hockey regular season titles and one Atlantic Hockey playoff championship, helping Robert Morris to its first NCAA tournament appearance. The class of 2016 seniors have won 87 games, more than any other class in Colonials history.

Cope has already joined the team in Norfolk and the Admirals host the Orlando Solar Bears this Friday and Saturday.
