Ferguson & Leavens Named Hobey Baker Nominees

Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Robert Morris University men's hockey team is pleased to announce two nominees for NCAA men's hockey's top honor, the Hobey Baker Award. Junior forward Brady Ferguson and senior forward Daniel Leavens are each among the 66 players nationwide that have been nominated for the award.

Ferguson and Leavens are linemates on one of the top three scoring lines in NCAA hockey. Ferguson reached the 100 career points milestone as part of a four-point performance this past Saturday in a 6-0 win at Holy Cross. Ferguson's 42 points are 4th in the NCAA and lead Atlantic Hockey. Ferguson has 16 goals and 26 assists this season, leading the NCAA in power play points with 22 points on 8 goals and 14 assists. The junior from Lewisville, Texas has three game-winning goals and a shorthanded goal. Ferguson recorded his first career hat trick on October 8 at RIT, part of an RMU record six-point game (3G, 3A).

Leavens is second in Atlantic Hockey in scoring, 11th in the NCAA with 34 points on 10 goals and 24 assists. Leavens is tied for the lead nationally with 5 game-winning goals this season and has a pair of shorthanded goals as well. Leavens, along with Ferguson, is part of the Colonials power play that has been ranked in the top six nationally throughout the season. The senior and assistant captain from Toronto, Ontario, has 14 power play assists. Leavens has 93 career points on 36 goals and 57 assists.

Given annually to college hockey's top player, the Hobey Baker fan-voting opened on Monday, January 30. This first phase of fan balloting will run now through March 5, 2017. Phase two of fan balloting will begin on March 16 from the list of Top Ten Hobey Baker finalists and will close March 26. The fans' vote accounts for a full 1 percent of the total ballot in each phase in selecting this year's award recipient.

Award criteria include candidates emulating the exceptional character traits exhibited by the award's namesake, Hobey Baker. A legendary American hero, Baker was a World War I fighter pilot and was known as America's greatest amateur athlete in his day, excelling at hockey and football at Princeton University. Award candidates must demonstrate strength of character both on and off the ice, contribute to the integrity of his team and display outstanding skills in all phases of the game. Consideration should be given to scholastic achievement and sportsmanship.  

The 2017 Hobey Baker Award winner will be announced from a field of three Hobey Hat Trick finalists on Friday, April 7, 2017 during the NCAA Frozen Four Championships in Chicago, IL. For more info on the Hobey Baker Award, please visit www.hobeybaker.com
