Moon Township, Pa. – For the third consecutive season, the Robert Morris University men's golf team collected the Northeast Conference (NEC) Team Sportsmanship Award, joining the men's lacrosse team as RMU programs who have earned the honor this academic year.
Robert Morris placed third at April's NEC Championships, its ninth consecutive finish on the top half of the conference leaderboard. The Colonials finished the 2016-17 campaign with a stroke average of 300.6 – the third best mark in single-season team history – and placed a pair of players (Daniel Franco Saad, Max Palmer) on the All-NEC Second Team. Palmer also brought home the program's first NEC Rookie of the Year award after pacing the team in stroke average at 74.7.
The Colonials extended their streak of seasons with at least one tournament victory to eight after capturing the RMU Colonial Classic on April 10-11. RMU tallied top half finishes in eight of its 10 events this season, including a second-place effort at the Navy Fall Classic and fourth-place finishes in the Bucknell Fall Invitational and Lonnie Barton Invitational.
Instituted by league presidents in 2008, the awards are designed to acknowledge the team in each conference sport that, in the opinion of its peers, most closely demonstrates good sportsmanship based on the NEC Principles of Sportsmanship and Standards of Conduct. Voting is conducted at the conclusion of each season by each team and head coach, who rank teams within the conference based on a set of criteria.
