Trio Headed To Pittsburgh Basketball Hall of Fame

Marshall, Jackson, Shovlin help make up PBC Class of 2017

Moon Township, Pa. – Former Robert Morris University men's basketball student-athletes Jonathan Marshall (1970-72) and Gabe Jackson (1992-95) will be inducted into the Pittsburgh Basketball Club Hall of Fame Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018, at the Baierl Hall of Fame Brunch at Chartiers Country Club.

Marshall and Jackson are part of the Legends Class, while the Voice of the Colonials, Chris Shovlin, will be inducted as part of the Contributors Class.

The 2011 veteran's choice to be inducted into the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame, Marshall spent two seasons at Robert Morris when the program was at the junior college level under former head coach Gus Kropp. In two seasons for the Colonials, Marshall, a native of Clairton, Pa., averaged a double-double, scoring 743 points (12.8 ppg) while grabbing 689 rebounds (11.9 rpg).

During his sophomore season in 1971-72, Marshall averaged 16.4 points and 15.9 rebounds per game. He owns the single-game record for the most rebounds in a game by a student-athlete in an RMU uniform, as he pulled down 26 caroms in a 92-44 victory over Catonsville (2/12/72). A graduate of Clairton High School, Marshall concluded his Division I career at Penn State.

Jackson, a native of New Brighton, Pa., and a graduate of New Brighton High School, spent three years with the Colonials and appeared in 77 career games, including 74 starts. He posted career averages of 12.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.

Jackson owns the RMU career record for field goal percentage, as in three seasons he converted 56.8 percent (329-for-579) of his shots from the field. Jackson's best campaign came as a senior in 1994-95, when he led the Colonials in both scoring (18.3 ppg) and rebounding (7.5 rpg).

The 2017-18 season marks Shovlin's 31st as the Voice of the Colonials, and he has called the action for over 850 basketball games during his tenure. Shovlin has called each of RMU's last six trips to the NCAA Tournament (1989, 1991, 1992, 2009, 2010, 2015) as well as RMU's trips to the NIT (2008, 2013, 2014) and the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (2012). Shovlin has been the recipient of three Achievement in Radio (A.I.R.) awards, including his third in 2008 for his call of RMU's 57-51 victory at Boston College Jan. 7, 2008.

A native of Midland, Pa., Shovlin was inducted into the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012, the first inductee ever to be active at Robert Morris at the time of enshrinement, and was inducted into the Beaver County Sports Hall of Fame in April of 2006.

The RMU trio that are part of the Pittsburgh Basketball Club Class of 2017 join former Colonials Cleveland Edwards (2011), Vaughn Luton (2013), Myron Walker (2014), Craig Prosser (2015) and Ricky Cannon (2016) in the PBC Hall of Fame.
