Miller First, Colonials Second After First Day of NKU Fall Collegiate Classic

Chase Miller opened his career with a two-under 140 over two rounds to lead the field; RMU sits one stroke off the team lead

Batvia, Ohio – The Robert Morris University men's golf team sits a single stroke off the lead after the opening two rounds of the Northern Kentucky Fall Collegiate Classic, firing an eight-over 292 in the first 18 holes before closing the day with a four-over 288.

Playing at the par-71, 6,845-yard Elks Run Golf Club, Robert Morris posted a 12-over 580 on the day, one shy of Green Bay's 11-over 579. Evansville sits in third with a 583 (+15), followed by tournament host Northern Kentucky (584, +16), Detroit Mercy (594, +26), Thomas More (627, +59), and Saint Francis U (639, +71).

RESULTS: 2018 NKU Fall Collegiate Classic First & Second Rounds

Pacing the field individually is Chase Miller, who is competing in his first collegiate event. Miller, a freshman from Bernville, Pa., owns a one-stroke lead over Evansville's Dallas Koth and Green Bay's Ben Gilles after posting a two-under 140. He fired a two-under 69 to begin the tournament, sinking five birdies and 10 pars. Miller added four more birdies in the second trip – including three on the front nine to go along with six pars – to finish with an even-par 71.

Max Palmer is tied for sixth individually with a two-over 144. Palmer posted back-to-back one-over 72 rounds, first using a birdie and 15 pars to card that number in the morning. The latter round featured third birdies – two of which were on the front nine – and 13 pars.

David Szymanski and Bryce Gorrell are part of a deadlock for 15th place after two rounds, each posting a six-over 148 on the day. Szymanski shaved two strokes off his first-round score in the second trip, tallying four birdies and 11 pars to card a two-over 73. Gorrell improved by four strokes in the second round, registering a one-over 72 thanks to three birdies and 12 pars.

Kyle Grube rounded out the Colonial contingent, sitting in a tie for 24th place with an 11-over 153. Grube also got better on his second walk around the course, firing a three-over 74 with two birdies and 11 pars.

Miller leads the field in Par 4 scoring with a 3.91 stroke average, while Szymanski and Gorrell are each tied for second in Par 3 and Par 5 scoring, respectively. Szymanski is averaging 2.88 strokes on Par 3 holes, while Gorrell is at 4.50 on Par 5 holes.

Palmer totaled 28 pars on the day, leading all players. Miller also paces the field in birdies with nine.

Robert Morris concludes play at the NKU Fall Collegiate Classic tomorrow, teeing off with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
