Apalachin, N.Y. – The Robert Morris University men's golf team opened the Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational with a first-round total of 298 (+10), good for a tie for fifth out of 16 teams entering tomorrow's final round.
Playing at the par-72, 7,159-yard Links at Hiawatha Landing, the Colonials share the fifth spot with Rider and are five strokes behind third-place teams St. Bonaventure (293, +5) and Columbia (293, +5). Tournament host Binghamton fired an 11-under 277 to own a commanding lead, with Longwood sitting in second at 289 (+1). Northeast Conference (NEC) teams LIU Brooklyn (303, +15) and St. Francis Brooklyn (313, +25) currently rank 11th and 15th, respectively.
RESULTS: Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational (First Round)
Leading the way for RMU is Bryce Gorrell, who is one of 11 players under par. Gorrell ranks in a tie for eighth with a one-under 71, which is four strokes off the individual lead. He did most of his damage on the front nine, collecting three birdies and five pars. The senior added another birdie and six pars on the back nine, finishing without a bogey on a par four.
Max Palmer fired a three-over 75 to sit in a tie for 31st overall. Palmer's round consisted of two birdies and 11 pars, with both red marks coming on back-to-back holes on the back nine.
David Szymanski and Kyle Grube each posted a four-over 76 to tie for 38th. Szymanski registered three birdies and 10 pars in the first round, while Grube was more par-heavy with 12 pars and a birdie.
Chase Miller rounded out the Colonial five with a six-over 78, tallying a pair of birdies and nine pars – seven coming in a row from holes 11 to 17.
Robert Morris concludes play in its second tournament of the fall with a 9:15 a.m. tee time.
