RMU Softball Hit-A-Thon to Benefit Connor's Cure

Moon Township, Pa. – The Robert Morris University softball team is proud to announce its 2019 Connor's Cure Hit-A-Thon, a season-long fundraising event to help raise money for Connor's Cure and its mission to conquer pediatric cancer. In addition, the Colonials are organizing single day fundraisers as well as collecting donations at every home game, all to benefit Connor's Cure and Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.

"There is truly nothing else that makes a bigger impact on your life than helping others in need. So it is important to us as a program to give back to the community, to teach our student-athletes about philanthropy," said RMU interim head coach Jexx Varner. "We wanted start a legacy of giving back that will connect our young women to the community and one another for years to come. Our young women chose Connor's Cure because of the local ties to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, but also the links between the University and WWE through the courses taught on campus. But most importantly, they selected Connor's Cure and Children's Hospital because of the opportunity to help those who are the most helpless in our community and across the country. I am very proud of them!"

Connor's Cure was created in honor of eight-year-old Connor Michalek, who battled medulloblastoma, a rare tumor that affects the brain and spinal cord. Connor was from Shaler Township in Pittsburgh and passed away in April of 2014. WWE Chief Brand Officer Stephanie McMahon and her husband WWE Executive Vice President Paul Levesque established Connor's Cure as a fund within Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation to support pediatric brain and spinal cord cancer research. In 2016, WWE and The V Foundation announced a partnership to support pediatric cancer research nationally through funds raised by Connor's Cure.

Donate:   OnlineDonation Form | Walk for Children's

This Hit-A-Thon will provide two options to help raise money for Connor's Cure. The first option encourages donors to pledge a certain amount of money per a statistical category for the 2019 season. Simply write in an amount you wish to donate per hit, run, homerun, defensive double play or pitching strikeout. For example, if you choose to donate five cents per hit and the Colonials finish the season with 400 hits, your donation would be $20.

The second option is to make a flat donation with an amount chosen by you. The suggested amount is $25, although donors are encouraged to make a donation that they are comfortable giving. All donations are tax deductible.

The team is in the process of organizing details for a campus dodge ball tournament later in the semester. The Colonials will also put together a team for the Walk For Children's event in Schenley Park on June 1, an event that supports the patients and their families at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.
