Moon Township, Pa. – The RMU track & field team christened its 2021 spring indoor season Friday by taking part in the YSU Mid-Major Invitational at the Watson and Tressel Training Site (WATTS) in Youngstown, Ohio.
Highlighting the first day for the Colonials was junior
Keturah Hunter, who claimed bronze in the weight throw with a toss of 18.44 meters (60'6"). The distance ranks third all-time in program history and is the farthest distance in the event for an RMU student-athlete in over 15 years.
Former thrower Nicole Downing (2001-05) owns the indoor school record in the weight throw with a toss of 61'6.25" that was established at the Charles L. Sewall Center Jan. 30, 2005. Downing also produced a throw of 60'7.75" in the event at the 2005 Northeast Conference (NEC) Indoor Track & Field Championships.
The performance by Hunter was part of a solid effort by the Colonials in the weight throw. Senior
Yessie Valencia finished sixth with a throw of 16.97 meters (55'8.25"), establishing a personal record. Sophomore
Alijah Caul finished with a distance of 12.71 meters (41'8.50"), while senior
Estelle Katende posted a toss of 11.87 meters (38'11.50").

Rounding out the field for RMU in the weight throw was junior
Taylor Mears, senior
Harley Stuebgen and freshman
Alana Palmer. Mears recorded a throw of 11.79 meters (38'8.25"), Stuebgen finished at 10.43 meters (34'2.75") and Palmer finished with a distance of 10.19 meters (33'5.25").
Elsewhere in the field events for the Colonials, junior
Tara Gologram finished seventh in the long jump with a leap of 5.27 meters (17'3.50"), while in the same event sophomore
Lauren Chappell recorded a distance of 4.87 meters (15'11.75").
On the track, Gologram posted the top time for RMU in the 60-meter dash at 8.42 seconds. In the 60-meter hurdles, freshman
Gracie Parker qualified for Saturday's finals in the event by recording a time of 9.43 seconds.
RMU concludes the YSU Mid-Major Invitational at WATTS Saturday, Jan. 30, with competition beginning at 10:00 a.m.
