Moon Township, Pa. – The RMU rowing team opened its 2021-22 season Saturday with 12 entrants taking part in the Head of the Ohio in Pittsburgh, Pa.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
The Colonials continue to enjoy familiar waters as part of the Head of the Ohio, as two years after the Lightweight 4+ earned gold at the regatta, the Open 4+ finished first Saturday. RMU posted a time of 14:39.0, easily crossing the finish line ahead of Duquesne (15:06.7), Duquesne B (15:14.2) and Case Western (15:25.1). Serving as the coxswain for the winning boat for the Colonials was sophomore
Sebastiana Lopez.

"It's been two years since we've had the opportunity to compete in a head race and I'm personally thankful that Head of the Ohio was able to provide such a tremendous racing experience," head coach
Carol Schoenecker said. "There's nothing better than racing a wide variety of boats in your home city, surrounded by family, friends and our larger rowing community. Our student-athletes showed up hungry, ready, and left with some hardware to prove it."
SILVER SURFER
In addition to the triumph for the Open 4+, the RMU Open 8+ claimed silver, recording a time of 14:35.2, finishing ahead of Duquesne B (14:55.9), Penn State (15:18.4), Miami University (15:30.4) and Pitt (15:32.4). Senior
Jayme Sanner served as the coxswain for the Colonials.
QUOTABLE
"It was great to see our team show up to compete in our first race this year, support one another and give it their all," said Sanner. "A lot of hard work has been put in on the water these past few weeks and it feels great to walk away with four boats winning medals. We're looking forward to our next race in two weeks."
