West Lafayette, Ind. – The Robert Morris University men's golf team opened play at the Horizon League Championships with a tally of 303 (+15), placing the Colonials third out of 10 teams following this afternoon's first round. RMU trails Oakland (288, E) and defending champion Wright State (292, +4) after 18 holes.

NOT THEIR FIRST RODEO
RMU returned a pair of players from its 2019 Northeast Conference (NEC) Championships side in graduate student Kyle Grube and junior Chase Miller. The two veterans led the Colonials in their Horizon League debut, both posting a round of 74 (+2) to share 11th place individually. Grube netted birdies on a pair of par fours to go along with 12 pars, while Miller netted four birdies – two coming on par fives – and nine pars to finish his round. Both finished even on par-three holes – one stroke shy of the best individual performance – and Miller finished two-under on par-five holes to place second in that department.

MAN FROM THE MOON
Redshirt sophomore Chris Sabol bounced back from a disappointing performance at the Mountaineer Invitational, placing third on the team with a round of 77 (+5). Sabol carded an eagle on the par-five, 494-yard fourth hole and tallied back-to-back birdies on the eighth and ninth holes. He was one of three players this afternoon to record an eagle, joining Detroit Mercy's Scott Sparks and IUPUI's Matthew Baxter, and added seven pars to complete his afternoon.

DOUBLE DEBUT
Along with the aforementioned Sabol, both freshman Skyler Fox and sophomore Alex Seelig made their conference championship debut this afternoon. Fox sits in a tie for 30th after posting a 78 (+6), netting two birdies and eight pars. Seelig collected the same amount of birdies and pars as his teammate, ultimately carding an 84 (+12).

THE ROUNDUP
Oakland, Wright State, and RMU make up the top three, with Purdue Fort Wayne (304, +16), Cleveland State (305, +17), Youngstown State (307, +19), IUPUI (309, +21), Green Bay (311, +23), Detroit Mercy (312, +24), and Northern Kentucky (320, +32) rounding out the field. Oakland's Thomas Giroux and Wright State's Mikkel Mathiesen share the individual lead at 70 (-2), with four other players sitting behind them at 72 (E) following 18 holes.

NEXT UP
RMU continues play in the second round of the Horizon League Championships tomorrow with a 9:15 a.m. tee time.
