West Lafayette, Ind. – The Robert Morris University men's golf team completed its 2020-21 season with a fifth-place finish at the Horizon League Championships, carding a 312 (+24) this afternoon to compile a total score of 920 (+56) over 54 holes. Individually, junior Chase Miller shared 10th place by firing his third consecutive 74 (+2), finishing with a three-round total of 222 (+6).
MILLER TIME
Junior Chase Miller collected his third top-10 effort in five events this season, capping a solid abbreviated campaign that saw him lead RMU in stroke average (75.5), top-five finishes (1), and top-10 finishes. Miller's front nine was superb as he collected three birdies and six pars over the stretch, and added a fourth birdie on the par-five, 558-yard 10th hole. The Bernville, Pa. product completes the 2020-21 season ranking fifth in program history in career stroke average (75.94) and 11th in rounds par and under (7).
ONE MORE TIME
Playing in his final collegiate tournament, graduate student Kyle Grube carded a 78 (+6) and finished in a tie for 21st place with a three-round tally of 229 (+13). Grube's final round consisted of one birdie and 12 pars, and he tied for sixth among the 50 competitors in par-three scoring at 3.25 (+3). The Indiana, Pa. native concludes his career ranked fourth all-time at RMU in rounds par and under (10) and sixth in stroke average (75.97). He also sits second in single-season stroke average (73.50, 2019-20) and rounds par and under (7, 2018-19).
CHAMPIONSHIP DEBUTANTS
The Colonial trio of freshman Skyler Fox, redshirt sophomore Chris Sabol, and sophomore Alex Seelig all completed their first conference championship this afternoon. Sabol was the highest finisher of the three, finishing in a deadlock for 28th place with a three-round total of 234 (+18). Fox was next in line, carding a 54-hole tally of 238 (+22), while Seelig posted a 244 (+28) over the three days.
FINAL RESULTS
Oakland garnered its first Horizon League men's golf title, carding a three-day total of 870 (+6) to finish seven strokes ahead of Wright State (877, +13). Cleveland State (906, +42) and Purdue Fort Wayne (907, +43) also placed ahead of the Colonials, while Northern Kentucky (926, +62), IUPUI (926, +62), Youngstown State (929, +65), Green Bay (929, +65), and Detroit Mercy (932, +68) rounded out the field. The champion Golden Grizzlies also claimed medalist honors, with Thomas Giroux registering a 214 (-2) to top Purdue Fort Wayne's Kasey Lilly (216, E) by two strokes.
WHAT'S NEXT
RMU is currently slated to return 11 student-athletes from its 2020-21 roster, including the quartet of Fox, Miller, Sabol, and Seelig. Redshirt sophomores Cole Chase and Jimmy Ellis, sophomore Josh Nagy, and freshman Xavier Schwarz also competed in at least one event for the Colonials over the abbreviated 2020-21 campaign.
