Hunter Sets School Record In Hammer At Hillsdale

Junior sits 48th in effort to qualify for 2021 NCAA East Preliminary

Moon Township, Pa. – As part of the 2021 Hillsdale "Last Chance" Classic Thursday in an effort to qualify for the 2021 NCAA East Preliminary, junior Keturah Hunter of the RMU track & field team broke the school record in the hammer throw.

Hunter fouled on her first attempt of the competition in Hillsdale, Mich., before recording a toss of 57.46 meters (188'6") on her second throw. The distance on her second attempt would've stood as the best in the event, but Hunter went one step further, hurling a toss of 57.95 meters (190'1") on her sixth and final throw of the day.

The distance currently places Hunter 48th individually in the East Region, which is good enough to qualify for the NCAA East Preliminary. She'll have to wait until results of multiple conference championships this weekend to learn if she has earned an opportunity to travel to Jacksonville, Fla., and Hodges Stadium, May 27-29, to compete in one of her signature events.

RESULTS: Hillsdale "Last Chance" Classic (5/13/21)

Hunter breaks a school record that had stood one day shy of 16 years. At the 2005 ECAC Championships (5/14/05), former Colonial Nicole Downing (2002-05) posted a distance of 57.58 meters (188'11") to break her own record she set two weeks prior at the Penn Relays. Hunter now owns three of the top five distances in program history in the hammer throw …

Name Distance Date Site
Keturah Hunter 190'1" 5/13/21 Hillsdale
Nicole Downing 188'11" 5/14/05 ECAC Championships
Keturah Hunter 187'0" 5/1/21 West Virginia
Nicole Downing 186'2" 5/23/05 Bucknell
Keturah Hunter 185'0" 5/8/21 #HLTF Championships

More impressively, Hunter is now 6-for-6 during the 2021 outdoor season for individual championships in the hammer throw thanks to her performance at Hillsdale. Dating back to the indoor season, Hunter has won gold in eight consecutive competitions.

Also for the Colonials Thursday at the Hillsdale "Last Chance" Classic, junior Yessie Valencia finished third in the discus with a toss of 48.97 meters (160'8"). In the same event, senior Estelle Katende placed 10th with a heave of 38.57 meters (126'6").
