Moon Township, Pa. – The RMU track & field team opened the 2021 Horizon League Outdoor Track & Field Championships Friday at Farmers National Bank Field in Youngstown, Ohio. The
Colonials sit second after the first day of action with 24 points, with the host Penguins grabbing the early lead with 35 points.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Another championship, another gold in the throws for RMU. In the discus, which was the first event of the championships, senior
Estelle Katende finished first by firing a distance of 48.04 meters (157'7"). The mark came on her second throw of the competition and inched out her fellow senior teammate
Yessie Valencia, who claimed silver with a toss of 47.98 meters (157'5"). Combined, the duo scored 18 points in the event for the Colonials.
ONE FOR THE THUMB
Katende is now a five-time conference champion during her career at RMU. Her performance Friday marked her second individual championship in the discus, as her first came as a freshman at the 2018 Northeast Conference (NEC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships. At that same meet she claimed gold in the shot put en route to being named the 2018 NEC Most Outstanding Field Performer. Katende also owns two crowns in the shot put for indoor track & field, including the 2019 NEC individual title and the 2021 championship in her first competition in the Horizon League.
MAKING IT COUNT
In her final collegiate competition at RMU in the javelin, senior
Harley Stuebgen earned bronze and scored six points for the Colonials. She recorded a distance of 37.75 meters (123'10"), trailing only Olivia Jones (43.80) and Cambrie Campbell (39.77), both of Youngstown State.
UP NEXT
The second day of the 2021 Horizon League Outdoor Track & Field Championships get started at 9:00 a.m. Saturday with the decathlon and 9:30 a.m. with the heptathlon. The pole vault begins at 2:00 p.m., followed by the long jump and the shot put a half hour later. The hammer throw, originally slated for Sunday, has been moved to Saturday due to possible weather issues.
