Moon Township, Pa. – Fifth-year forward
Kahliel Spear of the RMU basketball team has been selected to participate in the State Farm College Team Skills and 3x3U Championships at the Bayou Music Center in Houston, Texas, at 6:30 p.m. CT Wednesday, March 29. The event will air on ESPN2 Sunday, April 2, at 9:00 p.m.
Spear, a native of The Colony, Texas, led the Colonials during the 2022-23 season in both scoring (15.5 ppg) and rebounding (8.3 rpg) while converting 50.5 percent (196-for-388) of his shots from the field. He ranked 10th in the Horizon League in scoring, fourth in rebounding and seventh in field goal percentage while also finishing second in blocks per game with an average of 1.39 per contest.
For his efforts during the 2022-23 season, Spear was named to both the
All-Horizon League Second Team as well as the
All-Horizon League Defensive Team in a vote of league head coaches. The 46 rejections for Spear in his final season at RMU in 2022-23 not only helped him establish a single-season school record but pushed his career total in blocks to 104, also a new program standard.
The only student-athlete in program history to reach career totals of both 100 blocks and 100 dunks (101), Spear wrapped up his career with the Colonials ranked 18th in program history in scoring (1,159 points) and eighth in rebounds (613). He became the 15th player in RMU's 47-year NCAA Division I history to eclipse career totals of both 1,000 points and 500 rebounds thanks to a career-high 30 points in a
68-63 win over Oakland (1/29/23) at the UPMC Events Center.
In addition to his exploits on the court, Spear has been a stalwart in the classroom. A two-time Horizon League All-Academic Team (2022, 2023) honoree, Spear was named to the 2022-23 College Sports Communicators (CSC)
Men's Basketball Academic All-America® First Team earlier this month. An economics major, Spear has maintained a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.91. The first basketball player of either gender at RMU to earn Academic All-American distinction, Spear is the seventh student-athlete in department history to be named to the first team.
