Spear Signs Deal With San Giobbe Chiusi Basket

Former RMU forward to begin professional career in Italy

Moon Township, Pa. – Former RMU men's basketball forward Kahliel Spear (2020-23) has signed a professional contract with San Giobbe Basket of Serie A2 Old Wild West in Italy.

Spear, a native of The Colony, Texas, joins a host of former Colonials to sign a professional contract overseas, including former guards Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) and Karvel Anderson (2012-14) and forward Lucky Jones (2011-15).

In three seasons with the Colonials, Spear was a two-time All-Horizon League selection, earning third team honors in 2021-22 as well as second team accolades in his final season at RMU in 2022-23. In addition to being named to the 2022-23 All-Horizon League Second Team, Spear also earned a spot on the 2022-23 Horizon League All-Defensive Team.

Spear started the final 70 consecutive games of his RMU career and produced averages of 14.0 points and 7.4 rebounds while converting 53 percent (454-for-857) of his shots from the field. The only student-athlete in program history to eclipse career totals of 100 blocks (104) and 100 dunks (101), Spear owns the RMU career marks in both categories.

The 15th player in RMU's 47-year NCAA Division I history to eclipse career totals of both 1,000 points and 500 rebounds, Spear ranks 18th in the school career record book for scoring with 1,159 points as well as eighth in rebounds with 613. During the 2022-23 season, Spear established an RMU single-season record for rejections (46), a year after leading the Horizon League in field goal percentage (.551) during the 2021-22 campaign.

In addition to his exploits on the court, Spear was also a stalwart in the classroom. A two-time Horizon League All-Academic Team (2022, 2023) honoree, Spear was named to the 2022-23 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Men's Basketball Academic All-America® First Team. An economics major, Spear earned a Bachelor of Science degree in economics while maintaining a 3.91 cumulative grade point average (GPA). The first basketball player of either gender at RMU to earn Academic All-American distinction, Spear is the seventh student-athlete in department history to be named to the first team.

Led by head coach RMU Pat Gallagher Head Coach Andrew Toole, who enters his 14th season at the helm of the Colonials in 2023-24, RMU returns three starters from a 2022-23 squad that advanced to the quarterfinals of the Horizon League Tournament for the second consecutive season. Included among the returning starters for the Colonials are senior guard Josh Corbin, junior guard Jackson Last and sophomore forward Stephaun Walker.
