Moon Township, Pa. – The Robert Morris University men's hockey team announced their official group of captains for the upcoming 2023-24 campaign. Head coach Derek Schooley named graduate forward
Rylee St. Onge the team Captain.
Dallas Tulik,
Cameron Hebert,
Mitch Andres,
Gavin Gulash and
Luke Johnson were named Alternate Captains.
"We're really excited about this leadership group," said head coach Derek Schooley. "They all bring something different to the group. We worked a lot on our culture through our "goals, standards and priorities" since the team was put together and they were at the forefront of a lot of discussions."
Captain – Rylee St. Onge, Graduate, Forward
From St. Catharine's, Ontario, St. Onge transferred to the Colonials after playing three seasons with AHA member Mercyhurst University and a freshman campaign with the Alaska Anchorage. St. Onge already brings leadership experience as he was the Captain for Mercyhurst last year. In 24 games this previous season, he recorded eight goals and seven assists. Across his junior and sophomore seasons, he played in 45 games producing 16 goals and 27 total points. As a freshman across the country in Alaska, St. Onge piled up 17 points. Wearing the "C" for RMU, St. Onge brings 105 games of collegiate experience, scoring 32 goals and 59 points.
"It's an honor to be the captain of this group of guys. It's a big responsibility but along with the assistant captains I believe that we can lead this team to success this season."
"Our team and staff have great faith in
Rylee St. Onge as our captain," said Schooley. "Rylee has been a captain at the Division 1 level and is a very mature young man. He has shown to be a tremendous leader since he committed to our program."
Alternate Captain – Dallas Tulik, Graduate, Forward
Born in Kalamazoo, Mich., Tulik transferred to RMU after playing four seasons at Ferris State. In the previous four campaigns, Tulik dressed up for 86 games, producing 15 goals and 35 total points. During his junior season, he was second on his team in points with 19.
"It's an honor to be named a Captain for this program. We have a mature leadership group that is excited to start the program back up and build a strong culture."
Alternate Captain – Cameron Hebert, Senior, Forward
A known face to RMU fans, Hebert will lace the skates this time with an "A" on his jersey. A talent out of St. Andrews West, Ontario, Cameron like his sister Allyson Hebert, will be members of the leadership group this season. As a freshman and sophomore, Cameron combined for nine points. He along with his sister stayed with the program during the relaunch. Prior to collegiate hockey, Hebert spent a season in the NAHL playing for the Johnstown Tomahawks. He averaged well over a point per game, collecting 78 points in 58 games.
"To be named an Alternate this year is a complete honor and surreal moment. I still remember the days showing up here as a freshman and looking up to the older guys and thinking that I couldn't wait to be like them. With the team and coaches trusting me to be a leader on this team, is an amazing honor."
Alternate Captain – Mitch Andres, Graduate, Defenseman
Staying near the east coast, Andres joins the Colonials after four seasons at Boston College. As one of the leaders on the defensive unit, Andres brings lots of collegiate experience. Up in Boston, he appeared in 83 games, collecting seven points. Familiar to leadership, Andres wore the "A" at Boston as well. In his last two seasons, he played disciplined hockey as he wasn't called for a penalty once.
"It's an honor to be one of the Captains for this program. We have a great group of guys in the leadership group and we're excited to do great things this year."
Alternate Captain – Gavin Gulash, Forward, Redshirt Junior
Following a similar path to
Cameron Hebert, Gulash played one season for RMU and then stayed with the program during the relaunch. As a freshman he played in 22 games, recording five points. Before his D1 career, he played three seasons in the NAHL in his home state of New Jersey for the New Jersey Junior Titans. Featuring in 148 games, Gulash collected 94 points in his NAHL career.
"It's a true honor being a Captain for RMU this year. We have a great group of guys in that locker room and I'm hoping I can lead by example and set the right example for others to follow."
Alternate Captain – Luke Johnson, Defenseman, Graduate
Rounding out the leadership group, Johnson arrives at RMU from Providence College. Spending four seasons at Providence, Johnson skated for 65 games. The defenseman picked up 10 points in the process. Owning previous leadership experience, before college, Johnson was the Captain of his USHL squad, the Sioux City Musketeers. In the 2018-19 season, he produced 26 points in 38 games.
"It's an honor to be named a Captain. We have a lot of great leaders on this team to set an example. I'm very excited for our upcoming season."
Overall, each Captain expressed a common theme to the meaning of wearing a Colonials jersey and being named a leader ... "honor".
"Our Alternate/Assistant group all have leadership experience from either different colleges, junior teams or from learning from outstanding leaders in our history," stated Schooley. "It was important to acknowledge some of our previous historical traditions and we're able to do that by having Hebert and Gulash wear a letter. They all bring something special to our leadership group."
Head coach Derek Schooley and his team return to the AHA conference for the 2023-24 season. Along with his staff and six captains, Schooley and the program look to get back to the success the Colonials have achieved in recent history.
