Maurice ClarettOn January 29th, the Student-Athlete Development Calendar kicked off for 2024 with a Mental Health and Personal Growth event featuring Maurice Clarett.

Clarett was a national champion as the starting running back at Ohio State University. After that national championship, Maurice faced a series of setbacks that marked a turning point in his life leading him towards a path of self-reflection, growth and redemption. He is a mental health advocate and has opened facilities in Ohio focused on supporting members of the community who are struggling with mental health, behavioral health, and substance use concerns, and create a safe space to seek services without judgment and the opportunity to build a support system that enables community members to achieve their goals.

Maurice spent the evening presenting his story to Robert Morris student-athletes, sharing in depth his struggles growing up, his path in college and perspective on life. In an impactful retelling, he shared how he turned his life around in prison and began to invest in himself personally, and sought out help through mental health counseling. His vulnerability, authenticity and truth was impactful and compelling.

After Clarett spoke, athletes had time for a Q&A and to meet and greet with him after the event. Overall, student-athletes were able to walk away with a powerful message about asking for help, utilizing your resources, and growing and learning through life.
