MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Former RMU women's basketball player Vega Gimeno-Martinez won the silver medal representing Spain in the 3x3 women's basketball tournament at the Paris Olympics on Tuesday afternoon. Spain defeated the United States in the women's semifinal game to reach the gold medal game where they fell to Germany.

This was the first Olympic Games for Gimeno-Martinez after she played for 14 seasons domestically in the top-tier Liga Femenina de Baloncesto. The gold medal game yesterday is slated to be her last professional basketball game as she plans on retiring from the sport after winning the silver medal. She retired from 5x5 basketball in the beginning of 2024.

In her only season at RMU, Gimeno-Martinez was a standout performer during the 2009-10 season as she was part of the NEC All-Rookie Team after posting 10.3 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. She won NEC Rookie of the Week on three occasions which at the time was second most in program history.
