MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU women's hockey team kicks off their 2024-25 season with a two-game series against Union College on Friday, September 27 at 7:00 PM and Saturday, September 28 at 3:00 PM. Both games will be broadcast live on FloHockey, with Gero von Dehn and Bob Kennedy on commentary.
2023-24 SEASON IN REVIEW
Last season, the Colonials finished with a 15-19-1 overall record and an 11-8-1 mark in conference play. RMU was strong at home, posting an 8-5-1 record at Clearview Arena. They closed out the regular season with three straight wins, including a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory over #14 Penn State on Senior Day. In the CHA playoffs, the Colonials earned the #3 seed and beat Mercyhurst 5-0 in the semifinals before being eliminated by the Lakers over the next two games.
Freshman standout
Alaina Giampietro led the team with 31 points (19 goals, 12 assists), earning CHA Rookie of the Year honors. Her linemate,
Janelle Evans, tallied 28 points (9 goals, 19 assists), ranking second on the team. In goal,
Maggie Hatch played 25 games, winning nine, with a .922 save percentage and 789 saves.
ALL-TIME VS. UNION
The Colonials have faced Union eight times since the program's inception in 2005, holding a 5-2-1 record in the all-time series. RMU has outscored Union 30-17. In last season's opening series, the teams split the games: Union won the opener 5-2, and RMU responded with a 3-2 overtime win.
Morgan Giannone's standout performance (2 goals, 2 assists) earned her CHA Player of the Week honors, while
Janelle Evans and
Thalia D'Elia each contributed a goal and an assist in the series.
SCOUTING UNION
Union ended the 2023-24 season with an 8-25-2 overall record and a 3-17-2 mark in ECACH play. Their season concluded with a 5-2 playoff loss to #14 Yale. Sophomore Riley Walash led the team with 27 points (11 goals, 16 assists), while freshman Maddie Leaney netted a team-high 12 goals. In net, junior goaltender Sophie Matsoukas started 30 games, securing seven wins with an .892 save percentage.
UP NEXT
Following this weekend's series against Union, RMU will remain at home to host Bemidji State for another two-game set on October 4-5.
