Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Yale Pulls Away Late to Defeat RMU

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale scored twice in the third period to pull away for a 5-2 win over the RMU women's hockey team in Friday's series opener. The Colonials now stand at 3-4-0 to begin the 2025-26 campaign.

FIRST PERIOD
Yale jumped out to a quick lead, striking within the opening three minutes.

RMU responded midway through the period after earning its first power play of the night. Off a pass from Thalia D'Elia, a subtle redirection by Taylor Storey opened a lane for Morgan Giannone down the left side. Skating around a defender, Giannone went five-hole to tie the game, her third goal of the season.

Storey nearly put the Colonials ahead late in the frame, ringing a shot off the pipe.

SECOND PERIOD
The middle frame turned into a physical battle with multiple penalties on both sides. Seven minutes in, Yale capitalized on the power play to retake the lead.

After several penalties expired, RMU pulled even once more with just over a minute remaining. Shayne Desjardins found Lindsey Smolen splitting the defense, and Smolen buried her second of the season to make it 2-2.

However, Yale reclaimed momentum before the period ended, scoring off an offensive zone faceoff to take a 3-2 lead into the third.

THIRD PERIOD
RMU nearly equalized again when Linnea Misner hit the post early in the period. Moments later, Yale struck twice within a one-minute span to extend its lead to 5-2.

The Colonials continued to press late, hitting their third post of the night—this time from captain Alaina Giampietro—but couldn't close the gap.
