DAYTON, Ohio – Despite jumping out to a two-goal lead, the RMU women's soccer team fell 3-2 to Wright State on Saturday night. The Colonials now stand at 4-8-4 overall and 2-4-3 in Horizon League play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Colonials struck first in the 15th minute when
Ava Trethewey picked up the ball in space and launched a long-range strike over the goalkeeper for her ninth goal of the season.
RMU nearly doubled its advantage in the 31st minute as
Sydney Chontos' shot was cleared off the goal line by a Wright State defender. The pressure eventually paid off in the 36th minute when
Paloma Swankler ran onto a through ball from
Malia Kearns, rounded the goalkeeper, and calmly finished to give the Colonials a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
Wright State began its comeback after the break, finding the back of the net in the 58th minute to cut the deficit in half. Ten minutes later, the Raiders equalized, and in the 75th minute, Caitlin Burger converted a penalty kick to complete the rally and give the hosts a 3-2 advantage.
Chontos nearly leveled the match in the 85th minute, striking the woodwork, but RMU was unable to find the late equalizer.
