MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. – The RMU men's hockey team was unable to overcome an early surge from Lindenwood on Friday night, falling 6-2 in the series opener. With the result, the Colonials move to 2-8-1 overall as they continue their final non-conference series of the season.
FIRST PERIOD
Lindenwood struck immediately, opening the scoring just 23 seconds into the contest when Nolan Seed capitalized on the first shift to give the Lions a 1-0 advantage.
The Lions built on their momentum, tacking on two more in the frame. Goals from Connor Gengle and Drew Kuzma stretched the lead to 3-0 despite a competitive shot margin.
RMU outshot Lindenwood 14-13 in the period, generating chances but unable to solve the Lions' goaltending.
SECOND PERIOD
The Colonials made a change in net to open the second, turning to
Croix Kochendorfer after
Charlie Schenkel's 10-save first period.
RMU found life early in the middle frame. In transition,
Ryan Taylor fed
George Krotiris, who spun and delivered a sharp pass to a charging
Michael Felsing. Felsing deked around the netminder and finished to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Lindenwood responded three minutes later, with Charles Savoie restoring the three-goal margin.
The Colonials answered back on a power play as the captains connected.
Cameron Garvey hammered home a one-timer for his third goal of the season, set up by
Michael Craig and
Tanner Klimpke, bringing RMU within two.
But just before the horn, Seed added his second of the night on a Lindenwood power play, sending the Lions into the intermission ahead 5-2.
THIRD PERIOD
Lindenwood added one more insurance marker in the final frame as Gengle notched his second of the game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Lindenwood outshot RMU 50-24; Tanner Klimpke led RMU with four shots on goal.
- Felsing and freshman defenseman John Babcock posted a team-best +1 rating.
- RMU controlled the faceoff circle, winning 41 of 71 draws (57.7%). Freshman Bruce McDonald led the way with 12 faceoff wins.
- Babcock also paced RMU defensively with four blocks.
- RMU finished 1-for-4 on the power play while holding Lindenwood to 1-for-3.
- In goal, Schenkel stopped 10 shots in the first period, while Kochendorfer made 34 saves over the final 40 minutes.
