RMU Women's Basketball Welcomes Cal (Pa.) for Saturday Showdown

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU women's basketball team will return to non-conference action over the weekend as the Colonials welcome NCAA Division II, California (Pa.) to the UPMC Events Center on Saturday afternoon.
 
RMU LATELY
The Colonials started their Horizon League schedule with a 60-58 win over Northern Kentucky last Saturday in Highland Heights. RMU is now 6-2 overall and 1-0 in Horizon League action. Myriam Traore set a new career high with 17 points to lead RMU. Traore shot 11-for-17 from the floor and went 3-for-6 from deep. On the glass, Northern Kentucky pulled down 42 rebounds compared to RMU's 32. In her return, Eva Levingston pulled down a team-high nine rebounds along with two steals in the win.

SCOUTING CALIFORNIA (PA)
The Vulcans are 4-6 overall and 1-0 in PSAC play and most recently won their last game 70-59 at Bloomsburg on Saturday. On the road, the Vulcans are 4-1, with their only road loss coming to West Chester back in November, where the Vulcans fell 64-36. Offensively for the Vulcans, Kennedy Bankett (12.8) and Alicia Young (12.5) are both averaging double-digits to lead Cal. On the glass, Kimaya Williams is leading Cal with 8.3 RPG and has pulled down a team-leading 83 on the season. California is coached by Jess Strom, who is entering her 15th season at the helm. Strom is the all-time winningest coach in program history with a 301-105 record and led the Vulcans to an NCAA National Championship in 2015.
 
RMU AND CAL HISTORY
The pair have met 12 times, with the Colonials winning the series 8-4. RMU has won its last six matchups against the Vulcans, with the most recent matchup ending in a 68-56 win from the Colonials at California. At home against the Vulcans, RMU is 7-1 with its lone loss at home being a 73-59 loss in 1980.
 
LAYKE FIELDS SNAGS HORIZON LEAGUE FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Fields, a freshman forward from Farrell, Pennsylvania, was tabbed as the Horizon League Freshman of the Week after her 24-point performance in the Colonials' 73-71 win over Mercyhurst last Wednesday. Against the Lakers, Fields shot 11-for-17 from the floor while picking up six rebounds and a block in 21:20 minutes played for the Colonials. On the week, Fields averaged 13.0 PPG and shot 60%. She also averaged 5.0 RPG and 1.0 blocks.
