RMU Prepares for Alabama in NCAA Tournament First Round

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - For the 10th time in program history and the first time since 2020, Robert Morris has been selected to play in the NCAA Tournament. The Colonials (26-8) earned the Horizon League's automatic qualifier as a #15 seed and will face #2 seed Alabama (25-8), which received an at-large bid. The teams will meet on Friday, March 21, at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio, as part of the East Region.  The winner of the Colonials/Crimson Tide game will face either #7 seed Saint Mary's or # 10 seed Vanderbilt.
 
The game will air on TruTV with a 12:40 p.m. tipoff, featuring commentary from Spero Dedes, Jim Spanarkel, and Jon Rothstein. Fans can listen to the local broadcast on the RMU Gameday App, with Chris Shovlin and Jim Elias on the call.
 
RMU IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
This is RMU's 10th bid to the NCAA Tournament, its first since the canceled 2020 event. The Colonials' last NCAA Tournament games were in 2015 when they defeated North Florida in the First Four before falling to No. 1 seed Duke in the First Rounds. RMU is 2-8 overall in the Big Dance which included appearances in 1982, 1983, 1989, 1990, 1992, 2009 and 2010.
 
ABOUT ALABAMA          
The Crimson Tide advanced to the SEC semifinals before falling to eventual champion Florida. Alabama has 11 wins over AP Top 25 opponents, with four coming against AP Top-10 schools. The Crimson Tide lead the nation in scoring, averaging 91.1 points per game, and rank first in rebounding with 43.1 boards per game.
 
Guard Mark Sears is a 2025 Associated Press Men's Basketball All-American, a Naismith Player of the Year semifinalist, and a Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year finalist. He ranks third in the SEC with 18.7 points per game and sixth with 7.6 rebounds per contest. Guard Labaron Philon was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team. He is second in the SEC with 4.9 assists per game and leads all SEC players with 184 free throws made. This marks the Tide's 26th all-time NCAA Tournament appearance.
 
RMU AND ALABAMA HISTORY 
RMU and Alabama have met once before. Their only matchup was on January 4, 2014, when the Colonials led 23-20 at halftime. However, the Tide outscored RMU 44-33 in the second half, securing a 64-56 victory at Coleman Coliseum. Karvel Anderson and Lucky Jones combined for 30 points, scoring 16 and 14, respectively.
 
RMU vs. THE SEC             
The Colonials are 2-10 all-time against teams currently in the SEC. RMU's victories include a 105-86 win over Texas A&M in a neutral-site game at Marshall on November 30, 1990, and an upset of heavily favored Kentucky, 59-57, in the NIT on March 19, 2013, at the Sewall Center. RMU's most recent SEC opponent was Kentucky on November 12, 2021, at Rupp Arena.
