RMU Men's Soccer Opens #HLMSOC Play, Hosting Detroit Mercy

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU men's soccer team officially begins their Horizon League title defense, hosting Detroit Mercy. The game is set for Saturday, September 13 at 2:00 PM at the North Athletic Complex. Live stats will be available for the match. 
 
RMU LATELY
RMU (2-1-2) is coming off their first loss of the season, a hard-fought 4-3 defeat at non-conference opponent, Niagara. Despite the loss, the Colonials scored a season-high three goals. Defenders Kevin Gorbell and Jaxson Lee both notched their first career goals, while Kyle Schueneman netted his first of the season. Gorbell also added an assist along with Jack Bejarano.
 
Earlier in the week, the Colonials shut out Saint Francis in Loretto, Pa., as freshman Royie Rahamim scored both goals with assists from Anass Hadran, Schueneman, and Gorbell.
 
Through five games, Rahamim leads the team in goals with three, while Gorbell and Hadran both have a team-high two assists. Gorbell has played the most minutes on the pitch (432). In net, captain Josh Lane has started in all five matches, earning two wins, three clean sheets, and 16 saves.  
 
HORIZON LEAGUE SUCCESS
The defending champs begin Horizon League play with Head Coach Jonathan Potter in the midst of his third season leading the program. This past season, RMU owned a record of 4-3-2 in conference play, earning the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament. The Colonials were specifically tough to beat at home in conference play last year, as they went undefeated at the North Athletic Complex in Horizon League play (3-0-2).
 
In all nine conference regular season games in 2024, forward Kosi Udeh led the way for the Colonials, scoring four goals and one assist. Hadran also chipped in two goals and three assists. Lane started in all nine competitions, owning three clean sheets and 26 saves. RMU averaged two goals per game while allowing 1.33 goals per game on average. The Colonials outshot their Horizon League opponents, 122-93. 
 
ALL-TIME VS. DETROIT MERCY
This will be the seventh all-time meeting between these two sides. The all-time series has been very close, with RMU owning a 1-2-3 record against the Titans.
 
This past season, the Colonials officially clinched a spot in the #HLMSOC Championship, as they tied Detroit Mercy 1-1 at home. Udeh scored the goal with an assist from Hadran. Previously, in 2022, RMU won 2-0 at home. Senior Victor Koah registered an assist in the victory.  
 
SCOUTING THE TITANS
UDM (3-2-1) enters this week dropping a 4-0 result at #17 Kentucky. Prior to that result, the Titans picked up wins against Chicago State, Butler, and Mercyhurst. They tied #12 Dayton, 0-0, and then lost to Michigan State, 1-0.
 
Through six games, junior Drew Pierson leads the team in goals with two while sophomore Mano Karjian has a team-high two assists. Pierson has also logged the most minutes, playing 533 minutes so far. In net, sophomore goalkeeper Colin Monroe has started in all six games, earning three wins, four clean sheets, and 31 saves.
 
In 2024, Detroit Mercy finished with a 3-10-4 overall record and 2-3-4 mark in conference play. The Titans do return their top goal scorer from last season, Guershom Sylvain. The senior from Lansing, Mich. currently owns one assist this season.
