BOSTON – RMU men's hockey freshman defenseman John Babcock has been named the Atlantic Hockey America Defenseman of the Week, the league announced Monday. It marks the first weekly honor of Babcock's career.
 
Babcock played a pivotal role at both ends of the ice in RMU's regular season sweep of Mercyhurst, helping the Colonials secure the No. 3 seed in the upcoming conference playoffs.
 
In game one at Clearview Arena, Babcock delivered a clutch performance, scoring the game-tying goal in the third period before adding an assist for his first collegiate multi-point effort. Less than 24 hours later in the series finale, the freshman blueliner wasted little time making an impact, netting the opening goal of the contest to set the tone in a 4-1 victory.
 
Beyond his offensive production, Babcock was instrumental defensively throughout the weekend. Logging significant minutes on the penalty-kill, he helped the Colonials successfully shut down all six of Mercyhurst's power-play opportunities across the two-game set.
 
Through his freshman campaign, Babcock has compiled three goals and six assists for nine points while anchoring the Colonials' blue line. He currently leads the AHA with 97 blocked shots.
 
With Babcock's selection, RMU has now earned seven weekly or monthly conference honors during the 2025-26 season. The Colonials' award winners this year include Michael Craig (Defenseman of the Month), Tanner Klimpke (Forward of the Week), Dominic Elliott (Defenseman of the Week 2x), Lucas Massie (Goaltender of the Week) and Charlie Schenkel (Rookie of the Week).
 
RMU returns to action this weekend, hosting No. 6 Air Force in a best-of-three series at Clearview Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 PM on Friday, March 6 and Saturday, March 7. If necessary, game three will be played on Sunday, March 8 at 5:00 PM.
